Japan chasing mystery submarine

Japan's defence agency is yet to confirm the sub's identity
Japan's navy is chasing an unidentified submarine which was spotted inside the country's waters on Wednesday.
The Japanese defence agency reportedly believes the sub is Chinese because of its cruising sound, but a cabinet spokesman refused to confirm this.

Hiroyuki Hosoda said identifying the sub was difficult because it had not surfaced and did not appear to be heading towards a specific country.

4. BBC: Japan says mystery sub Chinese
Japan has identified a submarine which was spotted inside its waters on Wednesday as Chinese.
Cabinet spokesman Hiroyuki Hosoda said Japan would formally protest about the incident to Beijing.

Japan's navy was mobilised for the first time in five years in order to chase the sub from Japanese waters.

The incident is likely to further raise tensions between Japan and China, already locked in disputes about contested islands and gas fields.

"We have judged the submarine to belong to the Chinese navy and it's likely the submarine was a nuclear submarine and through diplomatic channels we are going to protest to China," Mr Hosoda said.
