Bob Jones Sees Bush Win As 'Reprieve' (Bob:Liberals "Despise your Christ")
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Bob Jones III, president of the fundamentalist college that bears his name, has told President Bush he should use his electoral mandate to appoint conservative judges and approve legislation "defined by biblical norm."

"In your re-election, God has graciously granted America -- though she doesn't deserve it -- a reprieve from the agenda of paganism," Jones wrote Bush in a congratulatory letter posted on the university's Web site.

"You have been given a mandate. ... Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ," said the letter, dated Nov. 3.

snip.............

Jonathan Pait, a spokesman for the university, said the letter was placed on the school's Web site because Jones had read it to students in chapel and many told their parents about it. He said Thursday that Jones had not received a response from the White House.

Pait said it would be a misreading of the letter to think that "everyone who voted for the Democrats is a pagan" or that "if you voted for John Kerry you are a despiser of Christ."

"For example, there are those who voted for John Kerry because they opposed the war in Iraq," Pait said. "Dr. Jones did not intend to paint everyone with that broad a brush."

Congratulatory letter to President George W. Bush from Dr. Bob Jones III
November 3, 2004
President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Mr. President:
The media tells us that you have received the largest number of popular votes of any president in America's history. Congratulations!
In your re-election, God has graciously granted America—though she doesn't deserve it—a reprieve from the agenda of paganism. You have been given a mandate. We the people expect your voice to be like the clear and certain sound of a trumpet. Because you seek the Lord daily, we who know the Lord will follow that kind of voice eagerly.
Don't equivocate. Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ. Honor the Lord, and He will honor you.
Had your opponent won, I would have still given thanks, because the Bible says I must (I Thessalonians 5:18). It would have been hard, but because the Lord lifts up whom He will and pulls down whom He will, I would have done it. It is easy to rejoice today, because Christ has allowed you to be His servant in this nation for another presidential term. Undoubtedly, you will have opportunity to appoint many conservative judges and exercise forceful leadership with the Congress in passing legislation that is defined by biblical norm regarding the family, sexuality, sanctity of life, religious freedom, freedom of speech, and limited government. You have four years—a brief time only—to leave an imprint for righteousness upon this nation that brings with it the blessings of Almighty God.
Christ said, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my father honour” (John 12:26).
The student body, faculty, and staff at Bob Jones University commit ourselves to pray for you—that you would do right and honor the Savior. Pull out all the stops and make a difference. If you have weaklings around you who do not share your biblical values, shed yourself of them. Conservative Americans would love to see one president who doesn't care whether he is liked, but cares infinitely that he does right.
Best wishes.
Sincerely your friend,
Bob Jones III
President
BJIII:lw
PS: A few moments ago I read this letter to the students in Chapel. They applauded loudly their approval.
When I told them that Tom Daschle was no longer the minority leader of the Senate, they cheered again.
On occasion, Christians have not agreed with things you said during your first term. Nonetheless, we could not be more thankful that God has given you four more years to serve Him in the White House, never taking off your Christian faith and laying it aside as a man takes off a jacket, but living, speaking, and making decisions as one who knows the Bible to be eternally true.

3. The hell he didn't! I lived in Greenville for six years. I know!
Bob Jones University is a real strange place. They poerate in a bygone era of the US and the world. To me, it was link a Baptist Convent/Seminary combined. The boys had to wear a suit and tie everyday. The girls weren't permitted to wear any slacks, and only skirts below the knee by a specific number of inches. You were tossed out if you were caught fraternizing with a black of the opposite sex.

Believe me, BJ meant everything in that letter and exactly as you understand it.

16. You're right! I have the wrong neocon! Found a link--
http://irascibleprofessor.com/comments-11-16-99.htm

The IP is sure that both Bennett and Buckley will do a fine job in helping to select the next president of Hillsdale College. Perhaps they can even find an intelligent conservative scholar who can keep his or her hands off the hired help. Both Bennett and Buckley have impeccable conservative credentials - no liberal thought has ever crossed their minds, so they should know the right people to ask. When he appears on "Meet the Press" in his role as national scold, Bennett usually looks like he is sitting on the worst case of hemorrhoids in the history of mankind, while Buckley always seems to have a supercilious grin on his mug. Nevertheless, the IP is confident that they will get the job done.

Now we know the reason for Bennett's hemorrhoids--all that sitting in front of the one-armed bandits.

15. Amen.
And may Bob Jones rot in his own worst hell for lying.

As an atheist, I deeply respect the teachings of Jesus in the Bible. In fact, the character of Jesus is probably the largest influence on why I identified with being 'liberal' at a very young age.

We're going to see an implosion of the Republican party in a couple years as the evangelicals try to hi-jack it. They're not going to be happy with the little bones Bush has been throwing their way. They want it all.

America might be full of sleepwalkers, but there's no way a majority of the population is going to tolerate being forced to bow to the agenda nutcases like Jones and Falwell are pushing. I have a feeling a lot of Americans are going to wake up in the next 4 years.

17. Well Mr. Jones he is my response to you
The Catholic Church teaches that all life is sacred. A candidate for office must understand that the Church stands against any policy or course of action that diminishes life, dignity or the rights of the human person: abortion, capital punishment, war, scandalous poverty, denial of healthcare, mistreatment of immigrants and racism, to name but a few.
There are 60 million Catholics in the U.S. We take the responsibility of voting seriously. Each of us will evaluate candidates based on what our conscience - formed by reading the signs of the times in light of the example of Jesus in the Scriptures and the teachings of our Church throughout the ages - demands. We will examine the broad range of issues, measuring "all candidates, policies, parties, and platforms by how they protect or undermine the life, dignity, and rights of the human person, whether they protect the poor and vulnerable and advance the common good" (Faithful Citizenship, U.S. Catholic Bishops, 2004).
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The republican party is guilty of most of the things that Catholics say are wrong. Us liberals can be tagged with only one of the things listed and that is support of abortion rights.

25. Mandate?
Bush's margin of victory (potential voter fraud notwithstanding) is the smallest by an incumbent - though he shouldn't have been one in the first place - since Wilson.

Hey Bob/Torquemada, do us a favor and just keep torturing your students and not the rest of us with very narrow, selective interpretations of the Bible. You seem the type who's forgiving of torture.

But anyway, try reading the First Amendment to the Constitution. You may find it shocking - especially the first sentence.

26. Help the Jewish Girl out here
OK- What does it mean exactly that "Liberals Despise YOUR Christ?"

Who is HIS Christ? Is that different than someone else's Christ? Does Christ morph into different things?

Is Dr. Jones saying that George Bush's Christianity is the only acceptable Christianity? Is there a guide book?

There is a Jewish Theological book called "A Guide to the Perplexed." Maybe I should go get it, though I don't think it talks much about Christ.

I mean no disrespect here- I'm just genuinely confused by what exactly it is Dr. Jones is trying to say. I full understand that I have no place in his America.

39. What Maimonides did think of Jesus
http://www.campusprogram.com/reference/en/wikipedia/j/je/jewish_messiah.html

Maimonides next writes why Jews believe that Jesus was wrong to create Christianity (and why they believe that Mohammed was wrong to create Islam); he laments the pains that Jews felt as a result of these new faiths that attempted to surplant Judaism. However, Maimonides then goes on to say that both faiths help God redeem the world.
As for Jeshua of Nazareth, who claimed to be the anointed one and was killed by the court, Daniel had already prophecied about him, thus: "And the children of your people's rebels shall raise themselves to set up prophecy and will stumble" (Ibid. 14). Can there be a bigger stumbling block than this? All the Prophets said that the Anointed One saves Israel and rescues them, gathers their strayed ones and strengthens their mitzvot whereas this one caused the loss of Israel by sword, and to scatter their remnant and humiliate them, and to change the Torah and to cause most of the world to erroneously worship a god besides the Lord. But the human mind has no power to reach the thoughts of the Creator, for His thoughts and ways are unlike ours. All these matters of Jeshua of Nazareth and of the Ishmaelite who stood up after him (Mohammed) are only intended to pave the way for the Anointed King, and to mend the entire world to worship God together, thus: "For then I shall turn a clear tongue to the nations to call all in the Name of the Lord and to worship him with one shoulder."

How is this? The entire world had become filled with the issues of the Anointed One and of the Torah and the Laws, and these issues had spread out unto faraway islands and among many nations uncircumcised in the heart, and they discuss these issues and the Torah's laws. These say: These Laws were true but are already defunct in these days, and do not rule for the following generations; whereas the other ones say: There are secret layers in them and they are not to be treated literally, and the Messiah had come and revealed their secret meanings. But when the Anointed King will truly rise and succeed and will be raised and uplifted, they all immediately turn about and know that their fathers inherited falsehood, and their prophets and ancestors led them astray."

45. Who is HIS Christ?
A very good question.

I assume Jesus the Christ is who he meant outwardly. But Christ is not Jesus's name. Christ is a/his title... meaning annointed one.

I'd stop being baffled by these people claiming to be religious if I knew it was some other Christ, because honestly they seem to honor nothing that Jesus honored and they seem to mock or hate those who do.

27. this man is no Christian.....
He is a "biblical literalist". He takes everything written (and rewritten many times over) to be the literal truth. Perhaps when taken metaphorically, the Bible contains some wisdom, but literally, it contradicts itself throughout. Christ was a peaceful prophet, not a war monger, not a racists, and certainly not a person who would have approved of invading another nation to steal their natural resources. I have met a lot of people in my life who call them selves Christians, but very few who are Christ like in their behavior.

37. These people don't even read the Gospels
There is nothing remotely Christ-like about bush. The only thing Jesus had to say even remotely about sexuality was a rather strong condemnation of divorce and remarriage, which is rampant in the "Bible belt". Christ did have quite a bit to say about how we are supposed to treat the outcast, the poor, the sick, children, and the elderly. His greatest condemnations were of stingy rich people.

As for the so-called biblical morality, many things that were accepted, or even encouraged, in the Bible, especially the Old Testament, we would rightly find despicable today, and even Jesus objected to some practices. He personally stopped the stoning of an allegedly adulterous woman. I really wish more people who claim the title of Christian really spent some serious time and effort on knowing and following Christ.
