Now, Santorum's under fire. Right-wing groups push him ...
...to take up fight against Specter

<http://www.postgazette.com/pg/04317/410839.stm>

Friday, November 12, 2004
By Karen MacPherson, Post-Gazette National Bureau

WASHINGTON -- Conservative groups yesterday urged Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum to help lead the fight to deny the Senate judiciary committee chairmanship to his colleague, Sen. Arlen Specter.

The groups noted that they already were upset with Santorum, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, for supporting Specter earlier this year in his Republican primary contest against Rep. Patrick Toomey, a conservative and strong opponent of abortion.

If Santorum hopes to avoid his own Senate primary battle in two years --and perhaps make a run for president in 2008 -- he needs to heed conservative concerns about whether Specter, a moderate, can be trusted to shepherd President Bush's judicial nominees through the Senate, the groups said.

<snip>

"Santorum would like to become the president of the United States, but he alienated a lot of pro-family, pro-life people when he came to Specter's aid over Toomey, who is a strong pro-life man...," LaRue said. "If he wants to get back that kind of support for his future political ambitions, he's got to do something" about Specter.

<lots more>

Perhaps a little tap on this wedge wouldn't be a bad thing, now and again? I guessed that * and Sanatorium's support of Specter over Toomey might come back and haunt them... but not quite this soon.

5. How does this play with Pa voters?
they just elected Spector - and now big players in the party that got him reelected are turning on him and trying to make him have less voice (and thus less voice for PA voters) in the Senate... how would it play if Santorum were to join in the fight against Spector? First time ever (and probably only) that I feel a tinge of sympathy for the rock and hardplace that the ugly righteous right is putting Santorum in - have to think that it will be used against him in the next election - whichever way he decides to play this. Oh, btw, my fleeting moment of sympathy is over. Should be interesting to watch unfold.

7. Organized labor in PA elected Specter
Santorum has great political aspirations. It will be very interesting to watch him plays his cards!

If Rick dumps Specter, his influence in the Senate will diminish.
If he supports Specter, he will no longer serve as the RW Poster Boy!

He deserves this.

6. Santorum's litmus test!
Looks like we will find out where Rick's loyalties fall.

If he supports Specter, his rabid right-wing base will hate him.
If he shuns Specter, his party will hate him.

This is shaping up to be a great weasel vs. weasel match!

I'm betting that Rick will abandon Specter.
