Rural-metro political divide seen clearly throughout West
"In the red states of Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, there were urban islands of blue in Las Vegas, Denver and Albuquerque.

They symbolize the great change sweeping the West: rapid growth and increasing urbanization. The question is: Do the booming cities offer hope for Democrats, or will newcomers help Republicans expand their reach across the region? "

1. Ya know.... I think this "blue/red" stuff is bull.
It makes the US citizenry to be stereotypes. It doesn't compute.
I spent today making visits (I'm clergy- the liberal type). The folks in my parish and hometown are rural types... traditional values, nascar dads, hunters, Wal-Mart shoppers, go to church, etc.
BUT, without a doubt, they voted for Kerry. I know, I live in Pennsylvania, and the rural areas appeared to go for Bush. But the folks I talked to fit the RED profile, but are disenheartened because Kerry lost. They felt he was the one chance for change.
I think we are being fed a line by the media. And in my experience, I am getting very suspicious of the main line media.

4. stereotypes are exactly that
They exist because at one point there was a grain of truth to them, but to hold them as gospel because some people fit the mold does a disservice to the millions of people who live are unique and unclassifiable.

I work for Harley Davidson. I talk to people all over the country, red state and blue daily. For every person you can find who fits the stereotype I can produce one that doesn't. There is no red and blue, only shades of purple.

3. sorry i was raised in peoria, ill and east bay, cali
went to school in n.y.
there is such a cultural divide in this country.
and i have many people in my family back in the midwest that i am -- at most -- polite with only.
they're anti-poor, anti-immigrant, anti-gay, etc -- all of the things that you think of as stereo type.
peoria was a nightmare growing up -- i want as little to do with those folk as possible.
i'm not angry i merely wish them what they wish for me.
