WP: Deputy Chief Resigns From CIA (Agency in turmoil over Goss)
Agency Is Said to Be in Turmoil Under New Director Goss

By Dana Priest and Walter Pincus
Saturday, November 13, 2004; Page A01

The deputy director of the CIA resigned yesterday after a series of confrontations over the past week between senior operations officials and CIA Director Porter J. Goss's new chief of staff that have left the agency in turmoil, according to several current and former CIA officials.

John E. McLaughlin, a 32-year CIA veteran who was acting director for two months this summer until Goss took over, resigned after warning Goss that his top aide, former Capitol Hill staff member Patrick Murray, was treating senior officials disrespectfully and risked widespread resignations, the officials said.

Yesterday, the agency official who oversees foreign operations, Deputy Director of Operations Stephen R. Kappes, tendered his resignation after a confrontation with Murray. Goss and the White House pleaded with Kappes to reconsider and he agreed to delay his decision until Monday, the officials said.

Several other senior clandestine service officers are threatening to leave, current and former agency officials said.

(snip)

"It's the worst roiling I've ever heard of," said one former senior official with knowledge of the events. "There's confusion throughout the ranks and an extraordinary loss of morale and incentive."

We all know that Poppy Bush's legacy is still much in control of what's happening these days, albeit, through the Carlyle Group.

14. That's not a theory, that's a proven law.
The "anti-Midas" law of George W. Bush can be confidently applied to any proposal or action taken by the administration of George W. Bush to predict there will be at least one catastrophic consequence of said proposal or action. It's money in the bank.

Honestly, the only good that could come of this is if the CIA officials get SO fed up they leak more damaging info on Bush.

to get all the old guard out so they can put in, in it's entirity, their plan for merika, and to do so they need to have their people in, soooo, you send a rough jerk who's Goss' right hand and all the lifers leave... not surprising, and it's not good, sorry. It's a sign of things to come in a couple years. we're screwed... God help evict these bastards somehow.

9. The dems chose not to contest Goss
"We'll shine a light on all the problems, ask a lot of questions and Kerry can replace him"

Now they don't plan on contesting Gonzales for AG. Apparently, the logic behind both decisions is to not appear to be too obstructionist. It didn't save Dashle's job and I don't think that plan will work any better this time than it did with Goss.

43. Gee, almost like they are coopted...
Dems continue to act like fucking jellyfish. I am really beginning to think they are paid off to the point that they've just been as completely corrupted (if not worse) than the repugs.

Our republic is on life support, if not dead, and they don't want to seem "obstructionist". Give me a fucking break. I'd never thought I'd say this, but bring on a viable 3rd party. Either that or the dems need a fucking spine transplant stat, and the evidence so far isn't encouraging.

15. Yesterday, Murray told the associate deputy director of
counterintelligence that if anything in the newly appointed executive director's personnel file made it into the media, the counterintelligence official "would be held responsible . . ."

So what's in the file, Mr. Murray. Bedtime stories?

This is great. Former undistinguished underlings come back to order around former bosses.

It sounded like the CIA needed some improvements, but this is not the crew to do it.

How many guys like this can we lose before we lose any value from our overseas foreign operations?

P.S. Doesn't "overseas foreign" sound kind of redundant? Is there an "overseas domestic" director?

40. This is scary
These guys botched the job when everyone was getting along, now what'll happen? shrub is unable to have unity and cooperation at an agency that works for him and middle America think he'll be able to do it for the country?

Replacing everyone with loyalists and yes men. Forcing dissenters to change their opinions and controlling info released to confirm preconceived ideas. Isn't this what dictators, like Saddam, do?

PRESIDENT-ELECT GEORGE W. BUSH: I told all four that I felt like this election happened for a reason; that it pointed out-- the Delay in the outcome should make it clear to all of us-- that we can come together to heal whatever wounds may exist, whatever residuals there may be. And I really look forward to the opportunity. I hope they've got my sense of optimism about the possible, and enthusiasm about the job. I told all four that there are going to be some times where we don't agree with each other, but that's okay. If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier... ( Chuckles ) ( laughter ) ...just so long as I'm the dictator. ( Laughter )

shrub to pbs Dec 2000. Maybe he's not such liar after all.

45. Maybe McLaughlin is also uneasy about the Diebold "tie-in"
Edited on Sun Nov-14-04 02:18 AM by AntiFederalstSociety
Dug this tidbit up today, not sure if it's related. But I see the DU is always looking to connect the dots...

"Diebold hired Scientific Applications International Corporation (SAIC) of San Diego to develop the software security in their voting machines. A majority of officials on SAIC's board are former members of either the Pentagon or the CIA, including: Army General Wayne Downing, formerly on the National Security Council; Bobby Ray Inman, former CIA director; Retired Admiral William Owens, former vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and Robert Gates, another former director of the CIA..."

http://inn.globalfreepress.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=980

Since these guys are experts at rigging elections in other countries, how hard would it be to make it so right here...

When experience counts, who you gonna call?
