AP's leader says Internet represents the future of news

ROBERT JABLON
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - The Internet will change the way news is provided to the world by giving consumers the power to demand and receive any sports score, analysis or breaking story instantly, the head of the world's largest news organization said.

Newspapers, TV broadcasts and even fancy Web pages will have less meaning as people use Web-surfing programs and recording devices to pick and choose items from various providers, dictating exactly what news they want, when they want it and on which electronic devices they want to receive it, said Tom Curley, president and chief executive officer of The Associated Press.

In the world of personalized news, "the content comes to you; you don't have to come to the content," Curley said Friday. "So, get ready for everything to be 'Googled,' 'deep-linked' or "Tivo-ized.'"

Even though newspapers and TV are losing readers and viewers, there is a vast market of "news enthusiasts" on the Internet that can be reached if old-style media are willing to make some changes, Curley told the Online News Association conference Friday in Hollywood.
(snip)

A recent study that found 29 percent of Internet users - about 43 million people - go online to get news three or more times per week, Curley said.

1. 'make some changes'
yeah, they could start by reporting the truth, rather than propaganda.

BS, whether it's in a newspaper, on TV or on the 'net, is still BS.

19. Yeah, I think he missed a really important point
We're not going to the web simply to avoid getting ink on our hands, we're going to the web for the REAL facts.

However, I'm glad they're beginning to notice, and the mention of bloggers was a beginning. I believe -- well, hope -- that the internet will put some serious pressure on mainstream news organizations to change their tune.

2. From this day forward I (really since last week) I will
only get news from the web. I will never look at the asshole face again. I will never listen to the right wing newscasters or to the stupid pundits ever again. The real horrors will begin with the next congress, I then will try to close my eyes and ears. I cannot bear to see America become a Fascist Nation.

24. Haven't seen a news program in over a year. Except for...

....BBC world news. They at least show unbiased reporting. Other than that I get most of my news right here. DU's LBN forum has the best overall coverage I've found.

3. The major media will continue to lose
viewers and readers until they finally report in an unbiased, un-soundbite fashion. When they finally show that they are doing some independent investigating and not relying entirely on whatever news the White House dishes out. Until they realize that fully half of their readers/viewers have an opposing viewpoint.

I simply have turned off ALL news broadcasts from the major media since the election. I don't have to submit myself to hearing their rabid rightwing gloating and covering up of a failed presidency who remains in office due to some very suspicious circumstances. And this INCLUDES PBS, who I had always turned to for unbiased reporting until just recently. They, too, have been appropriated by the right. Gwen Ifill and Jim Lehrer evidently know which side their bread is buttered on - they have lost all credibility with me.

4. Some truly BRILLIANT observations
about three years late. The dinosaur looks up and sees the meteor coming. "Hmmmm," he muses, "Maybe today will get interesting."

5. No Kidding
I too have stopped watching any corporate "news" programs. I do watch Link TV and News International Network, but that is it for the TV. Yesterday, while listening to the Radio, I heard the announcement that a verdict was reached in the Peterson case and I could just imagine the media whores hyperventilating, waiting for the moment. I am so glad to have that monkey off my back.

7. Unfortunately, they will simply replace it
with the next 'sensational' non-story. See, those 51% also subscribe to the National Enquirer and love a good freak show. Maybe that has something to do with why they voted for Bush, too.

It's a sad, sad day.

6. which means the govt will start clamping down on the internet
even further.

they've got corporate media under control. next move is the internet. look for sites such as this one to become a thing of the past w/in the next 5-10 years.

16. Thank you colonel for that observation.
Government control of the internet is part of the PNAC plan. I just hope they don't succeed. I shudder to think what will happen if government and the MSM get control of the internet and what kind of "content" it will hold.

9. An attempt will be made to control the search engines,
in order to "manage" the results that are presented to you,
somewhat as the TV news does now. In fact that is going on now.
Just so you know.

13. Fortunately, we can spread the word just as quickly by email.
I don't mean bombarding friends with full articles, but pointing them to specific blogs and making sure they understand where to find the real news.

17. I don't think they can control the search engines in the way desired.

I'm just saying it will be attempted, is being worked on. The
internet is not a limited access medium like bandwidth, the cost
of entry is very low, there is no real way to undemocratize it
without going to a real ubiquitous police state sort of repressive
approach, Stalinist in nature. Even the Chinese are not able to
control it, and they do whatever they like. And if you do that to
the internet, it's no longer the internet, it loses its utility.

There is also the old fallback of the dial-in bulletin board networks.

It's a little like print in being available to anyone, but better,
easier, cheaper, and not at all like TV which is very controllable
(as we can easily see,)

10. I get all my news on the net...
Meanwhile, the "news" companies would do well to START PAYING ATTENTION to the internet, blogs and bloggers, etc and stop poo-pooing everything they see there as 'conspiracy theory' just because it doesn't support George Bu$h.

WE ARE THE NEWS. They are the mouthpiece of the Bush Administration, and little else.

12. The internet cannot take care of local news and events...
that is why our home town paper has started shifting more emphasis
on to local news. I go to the internet if its something national
and I want to know about it now.

18. Quick, I need a sample reply editorial on Votergate
Sorry but I don't have enough to create a new thread.

Today in the Houston, there is a large editorial based on dismissing Votergate 2004 with the title Angry White Male is now bigoted Christian Redneck.... the author is RW Charles Krauthammer. I was wondering with post contains a sample reply I could send. I would also suggest everybody send a reply to viewpoints@chron.com. Come on DUers lets show the people of Houston and the RW Houston Chronicle we mean business.

Just copy the URL in your browser window and paste into a post (in case you need to know how to do it).
