Mortar attack in Iraq city Samarra kills two, injures eight, police say

SAMARRA, Iraq (AP) - Mortar rounds hit a residential area Saturday, killing two children and injuring eight people, police said.

The rounds struck an area in the city centre at about 5:30 p.m., said Lt.-Col. Saadoun Ahmed of the Samarra General Hospital's police force. Six of the wounded were children and the other two were women, he said.

It's believed the rounds were fired at a U.S. base but missed the target.

Samarra is about 95 kilometres north of Baghdad.
