Global warming a dire threat, ex-presidential adviser says

------------
By James Bruggers

The Courier-Journal

Global warming "poses the most serious threat to God's green earth that we have seen so far," a former environmental adviser to Presidents Clinton and Carter warned yesterday in Louisville.

At a Festival of Faiths breakfast, James Gustave "Gus" Speth, dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, spoke of dire environmental and economic consequences later this century if global warming isn't checked.

He said some of the uncertainty about global warming has diminished in recent years, and now there's a greater need for people of faith and others to lead politicians in state capitals and Washington, D.C., toward a reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions, which many scientists identify as the main culprit.

Speaking to about 150 people at the Galt House, Speth said some people and businesses — and state governments — already are taking the matter seriously, while adding that it hasn't been enough.

3. Nah, ....
See, as the earth warms more vegetation grows which absorbs more CO2 and then as droughts and other freak weather proliferate the homo sapien producers of CO2 start to die off. Its all really self-correcting. /sarcasm

Nevermind that the oceans are becoming more acidic as temperatures rise and more C02 is dissolved, threatening mollusks and reefs and at least 50% of the atmospheric oxygen is produced by phytoplankton.

But Bush says 'Clean Coal' is the answer.
In fact, I read that 96 new COAL power plant licenses were pending or approved (can't remember which) in the US.

North American nat. gas is peaking folks.
We are in the initial stages of a really serious energy, environmental crisis.

Repukes answer....PERPETUAL WAR

14. the Dems would have to actually pursue it, then...
...and piss off their corporate backers...

Of course, that would free them to talk about economic issues in more honest ways...

18. I read a shortstory once about how one group attempted a solution.

Can't remember the author or title, tho. Maybe a long time ago in one of my old Galaxy or Fantastic story magazine?

Anyhow, this was a group of environmentalists who blamed all the enviornmental and social problems on corporations. In revenge they started targeting selected CEOs and board members with a new kind of radiation that scrambled their "greed center" and soon they were actually working for the good of people. Of course they were quickly replaced by others who then be targeted in turn. Soon the corporate paradym was no longer 'greed for profit', but 'how can we help'.

Told you it was sci-fi.

Or maybe a dream?
