Gun battles as insurgents take Mosul police station

MOSUL, Iraq, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Insurgents overran a police station in the northern Iraq city of Mosul on Sunday and U.S. troops, backed by Iraqi security forces, were battling to retake it from them.

A U.S. military spokeswoman in the city said a group of insurgents stormed the Sheikh Fatih police station in southwestern Mosul earlier in the day and said U.S. and Iraqi forces had been fighting for more than two hours to retake it.

2. and more violence in Baiji

In the city of Baiji, U.S. helicopters fired missiles at suspected insurgent targets on Sunday, witnesses said. U.S. forces backed by tanks moved into the center of the city, home to Iraq's biggest oil refinery, after clashing with rebels. A local doctor said seven people were injured in the fighting.

Oil officials said the Baiji refinery continued operating and oil exports were uninterrupted at 500,000 barrels per day through the Iraq-Turkey pipeline, which runs near the city.

A secondary pipeline feeding the 350,000 bpd Baiji refinery from Kirkuk was sabotaged on Sunday, the second time in two days, officials said.
