The U.S. Department of Defense announced early Monday evening that Marine Cpl. Nicholas L. Ziolkowski, 22, of Towson, Md., died Thursday.

Ziolkowski, who was based in Camp Lejeune, N.C., was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division II Marine Expeditionary Force. 2. .
Until every Iraqi death is reported and given the same amount of sorrow this shouldnt be news.

Then again why weep for someone whos job is to kill people. The expectation of death is something that Americans dont seem to grasp, the soldiers decided to be there, no one decided for them.

5. The sad, ugly truth is we need our soldiers
That's just reality. And yes Iraqi deaths are just as important. We can't report every Iraqi death because our country, despicably, doesn't do "body counts". That should not stop us from showing sorrow for our soldiers who died for a lie. These soldiers volunteered to protect us, NOT to fight a "war" based on a lie.
Maybe you should watch F911 and/or read Moore's "Will They Ever Trust Us Again?".

9. Think I havent done both?
Simple buisness here, I may sound like a bad person for saying what I said but I also do believe that no human deserves to die. You do NOT need your soldiers, you need peacekeepers, and ideally you wouldnt need them either.

Is the US first for second for military spending? Ever wonder why the countries with the smallest amount of violent crimes also happen to be ones with small military budgets?

So these soldiers volunteered to protect us, I could see why someone would want to take that into consideration. But the second a soldier is asked to attack a country without visible evidence (truthfully, to attack any country ever) they should leave the military. Its pretty simple, but people tend to be blinded by there nationalism.

They teach us to lead by example our entire lives, the US is doing a good job of starting WW3 with the precident they are setting.

11. "Ideally"
Edited on Tue Nov-16-04 12:55 AM by For PaisAn
That's the key word in your response. I wish we had no need for a military. I wish there were no wars. I don't know if that can be considered realistic. The distintion is that this is not a war, this is an assault on a country.

But, just maybe, these soldiers didn't know they were being asked to attack Iraq based on lies. They are trained to trust the military and their CIC to not send them for a lie. Perhaps they are naive or just brainwashed. It seems that the majority of the country was brainwashed into believing many lies. It's sickening. So now do they all refuse to fight and face going to jail or maybe be charged with desertion and face the death penalty? I'd like to think I'd do the right thing in the same position but honestly I can't say for sure if I would or not.

And you don't sound like a bad person at all.

12. Idealism
The idealism was only the idea of having no military power at all. Peacekeeping troops only is a very real and viable option in our world at the moment.

Its kind of rash to bring up the death penalty, I dont consider that being an option, even with the current state of affairs.

You said it yourself, your not sure if you would make the right decision. Someone has to lead, and even doubting wether you would do something theoretically gives a bad start.

Take a stand, do what you believe in.

16. There's something unusual about this marine's death?
Cpl N. Ziolkovski's death is reported today Monday/Tuesday for us OZZIES. So what? This marine died on 11th Thursday November? Last week. Why has CENTCOM and the DOD held off on this death? Today, several friends and myself looked up all CENTCOM's reporting of marine and army deaths in Fallujah for November and found, with a slight exception for Captain Sims, that all reported American deaths happened within 2 days of their actual deaths. This marine's death was not reported for 4 days after he had been killed? We keep a close eye on American's killed in Iraq and to us this death and report was unusual?
We had a think amongst ourselves about why is this guy's death any different.
The guerilla's can only kill him in so many ways that Marine's are killing them? So we could not come up with any horrible dying way that is not being used by both sides.
However there were suggestions of "Friendly fire". Now so far, in Fallujah the American's are claiming that they have not killed anyone in friendly-fire, even though they have probably dropped, and artilleried more bombs and shells than they fired in the entire war up to now, on Fallujah.
Could a Marine have been killed by another Marine? or US Airforce pilot? Or could it have been even worse?
Other suggestions were that he was shot by another Marine who didn't like him?
He was shot by the Marines for refusing to do something, likely evil?
He deserted and was shot?
This death is a little unusal compared to the reporting of the other deaths by CENTCOM. His mum and Dad need to "dig a little deeper"??
