GOP weighs rules shield for DeLay

House Republicans ha until noon today to propose any rules changes to inoculate Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) from losing his leadership position should he be indicted in a campaign-finance criminal probe back in Texas.

Republicans dismiss the investigation by Travis Country District Attorney Ronnie Earle as a politically motivated witch hunt, but GOP internal conference rules are clear that any elected member of the leadership must temporarily relinquish his position if indicted on a felony count that could lead to more than two years in prison.

Earle’s investigation focuses on a group called Texans for a Republican Majority, a political action committee founded by DeLay, and its role in the 2002 statehouse elections.

“We’re in the process of receiving proposed rules changes. The deadline is noon tomorrow, and we have yet to receive any proposals dealing with leadership or their tenure,” said Greg Crist, spokesman for the House Republican Conference.

Don't you know DeLay is working hard to bring about the Raptor and working with Isreal so Christ will have a place to stay when he keeps his appointment?

This unfriendly characterization casts aspersions on what otherwise is a dynamic and highly motivated right wing tool. Oh and " class warfare" too.

6. When DeLay goes to prison....
the GOP sure is going to have a shitload of expaining to do to the public. Nobody will know about this rule change, but when the majority leader, a republican, becomes a felon, I wonder what they will say.

My question is this: How can someone who has lost their voting rights themselves hold an office?

In Texas, he'll regain them 2 years after his sentence ends.

...unless 2/3 of both houses of Congress overturn it. And it's unlikely to happen because the pissed-off Democrats won't allow it.

The rules change, which leaders said is likely to be adopted Wednesday, comes as House Republicans return to Washington indebted to DeLay for the enhanced majority they won in this month's elections. DeLay led an aggressive redistricting effort in Texas last year that resulted in five Democratic House members retiring or losing reelection. It also triggered the grand jury inquiry into fundraising efforts related to the state legislature's redistricting actions.

Did you catch this quote from the article:

"House Republicans in 1993 -- trying to underscore the ethics problems of Dan Rostenkowski (D-Ill.), then-chairman of the Ways and Means Committee -- adopted the rule that requires a party leader to surrender his or her post if indicted by any grand jury, federal or state."

Now that their guy is likely to get indicted, they change the rule.
