Pink Locusts from North Africa Swarm Through Cairo

CAIRO (Reuters) - Swarms of pink locusts swept through the Egyptian capital on Wednesday, evoking the biblical description of the plagues which struck in the time of Moses.

The swarms of millions flew high above tall towers or swooped down onto treelined streets, where scared pedestrians stamped on them or ran for cover.

The flying insects arrived from neighboring Libya after devouring the countryside in central and western Africa in past months. But locust experts said they were unlikely to wreak similar havoc in Egypt, where agriculture is a cornerstone of the economy

Not that I'd contemplate eating either- that is one weird story.

But here goes- my son goes to Hebrew School at our Temple and they had a food drive for a Kosher food pantry (yes, there are poor Jews).

SO I went to the supermarket with him and we picked out some food- canned tuna, pasta, cereal, kosher soup, and a can for fruit cocktail labeled all natural. So when we get home, he looked on the label and didn't see any "Heksher", the mark that would indicate a product is kosher for example the OU or a K. I read the ingredients- grapes, peaches, cherries, peaches, pears. Look OK. So I called the number for consumers...turns out the "Natural" dye they use to color the cherries is made from CRUSHED BEETLE SHELLS !!!! EEEEWWWWWWWW!


Don't you think most people would prefer a little red dye #2?
And do vegetarians eat bug products? Who knew? BTW- it's Del Monte

A good thing about being vegetarian: no need to have two sets of dishes.

...believe it is okay to eat the red locust family. Hence the rabbi in the picture up above. However, green locusts? That's a whole nother story :)
