Universal: Why We're Keeping Maggie Gallagher
By Dave Astor
Published: January 26, 2005 3:30 PM ET

NEW YORK Universal Press Syndicate today explained why it doesn't plan to drop columnist Maggie Gallagher, who received $21,500 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to promote President Bush's efforts to encourage marriage.

"She was asked to perform certain tasks," Lee Salem, Universal's executive vice president and editor, told E&P. "It was never a question of her promoting a particular bill or proposal in her column." He said Gallagher's actions were "substantially different" from those of Armstrong Williams, who accepted $240,000 from the Department of Education to promote the No Child Left Behind act -- and had his column contract terminated by Tribune Media Services. <snip>

1. I feel that the tax payers should get their money back from
the Gallagher payoff along with what was paid to Williams.

3. A cut? Have you seen her haircut?
My God - with $40,000 you would think someone could do something!

4. Well, remember what she was writing about.
She was against same-sex marriages.

Maybe she feared if she had an attractive haircut, she might attract attention from her own sex? This way, no need to fear the attentions of anyone.
