3. To me, she looked like a person with principles.
She looked exactly like someone who tells the truth when the truth needs telling. THAT is what honesty looks like, and I LIKE IT!

10. Author of article Margaret Carlson, Media Whore on "Capitol Gang"
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 09:28 PM by autorank
If you every need to vomit, turn on Capitol Gang, Sunday on the CNN-Robert Novak Network. Margaret Carlson is a regular, supposedly representing the 'liberal' line. Well I'm a liberal and, when I watched, I found her nothing but annoying. She'd criticize Democrats whenever she got the chance, particularly when they were making a good point. Since last Summer and my final good bye to all network/cable news, I have not missed her lousy commentary.

This article is typical of so called 'liberal' media. What a stupid, sabotage of a great moment. She cites a couple of negative comments and then, through an obvious rhetorical subterfuge, asks us to think this was the general consensus. First: not that many people know about her vote against the Ohio slate and her attack on Rice. Second: among those who do, there has been an amazingly tepid response. In other words, the very response Carlson wants us to believe took place didn't!

She works for Newsweek, owned by the Washington Post (PentaPost).

For shame Ms. Carlson.

On edit: This is a perfect example of how 'liberal' media personalities sell out. She's 'liberal' because she's defending a woman's rights point, 'shrill femme' prejudice, while the point of her article is the misleading representation that Boxer was "cut off at the knees," which is certainly not happening. This is such crap. Margaret, you act is getting old.

11. i feel like we read two different articles; when she says 'everybody'
Edited on Thu Jan-27-05 09:30 PM by codegreen
she is clearly referring to everybody in the media and most in politics; i didn't get the impression she was commenting on the grassroots or even the general public at all.

to me the whole thing looked like a screed against the media's double standards for women, and a further aknowledgement that there simply is no liberal media; that all the hounds are attempting to smear Boxer.

that's all i could get from it. it looks like something Laura Flanders could easily have written.

on edit: she means 'cut off at the knees' by the media and in the public arena, because that's all that was portrayed. i agree she could have worded all that better, and perhaps mentioned how thrilled the Democratic base is with Boxer's action, but really i don't see anything maligning or smearing about this article.

14. Carlson is "good" at her job but here is the key point, with all
due respect. It's style over substance, she turns this into an 'inside baseball' article. This is the major fault of the media post-Watergate. The substance here is the lies told by Rice and the fact that Boxer went after her, after standing up for democracy on 1/6/05. The article is about Carlson's mis perception of the response to Boxer's style. She could have used the considerable newsprint she has available to deal with substance. She did not. Neither do almost all of the 'liberal' media; it's all about how it looks, sounds, how it plays, sells. It is no wonder people across this country rarely get any substance coverage. Why do you think so many people think Saddam did 911? Fox goes for content, albeit, totally inaccurate content; the 'liberal' media goes for style, without ever dealing with content. The content here is that we have a 'miserable failure' as Secretary of State, a failure operationally and morally. Oy Vey!

15. Did you read the first three paragraphs? Sounds good to me.
And a quote from the article: "Even Boxer's supporters deducted points for style without adding any for degree of difficulty."

Notice that the article went into the republican and others' response after it summarized what Boxer did re opposing Condi. Seems to me that Carlson kinda agrees with your point. And if you watched C-Span, Boxer did get "cut off at the knees", Washington style, at the senate floor, and outside of it.

12. Neo-conservative paid media doing the Bush administration's...
...dirty work. If someone wants a true opinion of the Bushies nomininee, seek out the writings of Nikki Giovanni, a political writer and poet. Her bio:

http://www.poets.org/poets/poets.cfm?prmID=176

...and an example of her work:

Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why)

I was born in the congo
I walked to the fertile crescent and built
the sphinx
I designed a pyramid so tough that a star
that only glows every one hundred years falls
into the center giving divine perfect light
I am bad

I sat on the throne
drinking nectar with allah
I got hot and sent an ice age to europe
to cool my thirst
My oldest daughter is nefertiti
the tears from my birth pains
created the nile
I am a beautiful woman

I gazed on the forest and burned
out the sahara desert
with a packet of goat's meat
and a change of clothes
I crossed it in two hours
I am a gazelle so swift
so swift you can't catch me

For a birthday present when he was three
I gave my son hannibal an elephant
He gave me rome for mother's day
My strength flows ever on

My son noah built new/ark and
I stood proudly at the helm
as we sailed on a soft summer day
I turned myself into myself and was
jesus
men intone my loving name
All praises All praises
I am the one who would save

I sowed diamonds in my back yard
My bowels deliver uranium
the filings from my fingernails are
semi-precious jewels
On a trip north
I caught a cold and blew
My nose giving oil to the arab world
I am so hip even my errors are correct
I sailed west to reach east and had to round off
the earth as I went
The hair from my head thinned and gold was laid
across three continents

I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal
I cannot be comprehended except by my permission

I mean...I...can fly
like a bird in the sky...

13. Let's see how Condi can rival these quotes from Nikki Giovanni...
...<snip>

Nikki Giovanni Quotes

Ain't they got no shame

Everything will change. The only question is growing up or decaying.

I really don't think life is about the I-could-have-beens. Life is only about the I-tried-to-do. I don't mind the failure but I can't imagine that I'd forgive myself if I didn't try.

If you don't understand yourself you don't understand anybody else.

Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to the error that counts.

Some say we are responsible for those we love. Others know we are responsible for those who love us.

There're two people in the world that are not likeable: a master and a slave.

We eat up artists like there's going to be a famine at the end.

We love because it's the only true adventure.

We write because we believe the human spirit cannot be tamed and should not be trained.

You must invent your own games and teach us old ones how to play.
