Kristof Responds
Edited on Mon Mar-14-05 08:58 AM by Skinner

I have been reading a large number of negative comments about my editorials on liberal blogs lately, and I must admit, I’m a bit baffled by all the anger. I’ve always done my best to be fair – I go out of my way to paint both sides as equally culpable, even when one is clearly to blame. I struggle to be objective – I’ll criticize the Democratic Party for even the slightest infraction. I’m tolerant – I never criticize the Republicans for doing the same.

So I have come to the conclusion that all this animosity must be the result of some misunderstanding between us, so I’ve decided to take the opportunity to explain myself. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all my travels through the war torn countries of Africa, it is that there is no division so great that it cannot be healed by polite, friendly dialogue.

For instance, just the other day I had a lovely dinner with Ann Coulter, who a good many of you on the left have said some nasty things about. But instead of getting angry, I complimented her, and told her I was a big fan of her columns. And you know what she said? She said she loved my columns, too! “Who needs Safire, when we have you there to put the liberals back in their place whenever their spines begin to stiffen,” she said.

Then I said, “Look, Ann, I don’t know if you realize this or not, but some of the things you say, well, I don’t think you’d be saying them if you realized how they make me feel. For instance, when you said your only regret with Timothy McVeigh was that he did not go to the New York Times building… well I work at the Times, and that kind of hurt. It hurt me, Ann, and I was wondering if you could turn it down a notch?”

Stay tuned for Nicholas Kristof’s next column in the editorial pages of the New York Times: “How Bush can Salvage the Democrat’s Mismanagement of Iraq – If Only the Democrats will Let Him.”

1. "I had a lovely dinner with Ann Coulter" LOL!
I'm telling you- there's something wrong with this guy-

I've noticed he's gotten stranger and stranger over the past several years. I quit reading him about 18 months ago after he wrote some bizarre half-religious scrambled up take on some issue or another. I thought to myself: "what the hell is this guy talking about?"

This bit of satire only confirms that I'm not the only one who's seen it.

The NY Times really needs to find a way to ease Kristof out- for his own good as well as theirs. He really is becoming an embarrasment.

2. I'm sorry, but I think you have diluted yourself into thinking that Ann is
Edited on Sat Mar-12-05 10:05 PM by Enquiringkitty
just doing her job, Mr. Kristof....she isn't, she is expressing the prevailing opinion which holds power at this time. If her readers expected her to promote slavery, would she?...I would hope not. Looking at both side is the only way to see what is true...I agree with you there. The problem we have in this country today is that the far right and the far left will not give an inch and all of the rest of us are stuck in the middle. We in the middle can't seem to get together due to small differences between us which distract from the true goal.

The real issue today is, Is our country going to be run like a corporation or like a diverse Democracy. Most of the changes set forth by the Bush Administration are basic corporate tactic for assuring a profitable business and the employees of that corporation have basic "worker's rights"; but this isn't a corporation and we are seeing our rights and freedoms as a Democracy slowly being watered down until they mean nothing and all we are left with are public worker's rights. The fear of most of us on the left is that we can see Corporate America evolving from the free America we know. Look at the changes and proposals and compare them to a corporation....I think you will see that life will be almost the same in private life as it is in the work place now if Bush and Co. get everything they want. Please don't think there is a way to convert or find middle ground with a hard-core Repug....there isn't any way and they will use your interest in compromise against you and assume you are weak. I'm sorry....the line has been drawn...they are out to change my country for the worse and I will do my best to stop them.

Be prepared to catch some real S*IT for your next issue.....Democrats didn't mess up Iraq or get us there....Bush has!

8. "I go out of my way to paint both sides as equally culpable," - DING-DING
ding...

hello, that's one of the major factors driving the problem.

just give us the fucking news... if you insist on injecting your opinion at least make it one based on FACTS and point to the most successful and DANGEROUS crooks and liars in our society instead of "BALANCING" everything out, while giving us "YOUR" opinion and at times PROPPING THEM UP :puke:

they talk to us like we are fools... well maybe we are but sheesh we ain't ignorant.

i thinks he's work'n for the man or takes us all for suckers.

peace

9. This in not written by Kristol. It's a parody.
"Written by Dylan Otto Krider posing as Nicholas Kristof"

Not that it's not funny as hell but there should be clear attribution to the source so that readers know the origin of the quotation.

when I went to get a quote the lightbulb went off.

If you thought that was funny you may want to check the following, it also had me shaking me head and ROTFL when I realized it was satire.

14. That is such a perfect representation
of Kristof and of so many 'reasonable' Democrats who preen themselves on 'seeing both sides'.

18. Here's his mistake in thinking
I’ve always done my best to be fair – I go out of my way to paint both sides as equally culpable, even when one is clearly to blame.

That logic is senseless and I've heard it from many people who think they are above it all or want to play "the objective party". He's avoiding confrontation with the one who "is clearly to blame".

No side is ever pure as the driven snow (and neither is driven snow these days) but what a mistake to not confront the arrogant and mean-spirited policies of republicans. Democrats are *NOT* opposites to republicans - we are not the "equal and opposite reaction" to them. Kristof has seen the worst of the worse in this world and has written powerful articles on poverty, human rights and economic disparity. But I'm always surprised to see his lack of thinking skills in tracing back root causes (which aren't always a left/right issue).

20. No...it's satire....but actually it's the way some of these folks view
their writing....so it could be read as truth. You could almost see Kristof or Corn or some others defending their work this way. :eyes:
