"Do not weep for Terry": The Nashua Advocate
Edited on Mon Mar-21-05 06:13 AM by NewHampshireDem
One of the best pieces yet on the Shiavo case ... sorry to the advocate for changing the title, but I thought using that line from your ed would grab more attention.

http://nashuaadvocate.blogspot.com/2005/03/in-terry-schiavo-case-republicans.html

<snip>
People die under more tragic and contested circumstances every minute in the United States, and their unspoken and unheeded causes--universal healthcare, an end to homelessness, federally-mandated heating for the elderly, more money for Medicaid, more money for Medicare, better prenatal care for the poor, greater federal investment in disease prevention and research--get not a single moment of airtime in the halls of Congress or on our living room television sets.

No words or tears are spilled for them, or for their deaths.

No woman has ever received more due process in the American legal system, or had more engines of power directed toward the investigation and rectifying of any wrongs ever committed against her, or had greater scrutiny of the moral, medical, ethical, and scientific determinations made on her behalf and in her name over the past fifteen years, than Terry Schiavo.

Do not weep for Terry.

Weep for a country in which the business of government is meddling in the life and times of a single brain-dead woman from Florida, rather than securing a better future for the almost three hundred million of us without such a built-in voting bloc--such unprecedented access to power-brokers and primetime darlings--as Schiavo has had these fifteen years.
<more, much more>

1. did she have a living will? I had not heard that
this opinion is dead on - this law has nothing to do with that poor wretched woman and EVERYTHING to do with what is wrong with America today - the GOP.

4. If she had told her parents her wishes,
do you think they would have gone against them just to keep the shell of their daughter with them?

Is this more about what they need than about what she needs?
Do they need to keep her alive more than she needs to die with dignity?

8. yes, they would have
I heard something from one of the court cases last night where they said, in court, that even if she had told them she did not want to be kept on life support, they would not honor her request.

13. She was bulimic..which implies some sort of self-esteem issues.
That implies the strong possiblity of issues with one or both of her parents. Those issues may have never been resolved and that is why her parents are so unwilling to let her go..whether it is guilt, selfishness, stubborness, or something else that we cannot even imagine.

to gear up Jeb and Martinez for a 2008 run, why else would George get up and sign a bill in his jammies?

Jeb Secret Mover Behind Schiavo Bill

If the federal legislation saves Terri Schiavo, Jeb Bush will be the unsung hero of the effort.

The Miami Herald reported Sunday that with "less than 24 hours before Terri Schiavo had her feeding tube removed, Gov. Jeb Bush knew the effort to keep her alive was slipping away."

So the Florida governor stepped up to the plate.

The paper said Jeb "called Florida's newest U.S. senator, Mel Martinez, with an urgent plea."

"I'm not sure we can get it done here in Florida," Martinez quoted Bush as saying just after a new Schiavo measure stalled in the Florida Legislature. "Do whatever you can federally."

(cut)

Jeb: Court Order of Death Is Wrong

"We know Terri Schiavo has been severely impaired since 1990," Bush says in Monday's issue of the governor's weekly newsletter, "but she made no clear directive about receiving food and water."

"A court's order of death flies in the face of government's duty to protect the weak, disabled and vulnerable," Bush continued.

"I will continue to work with to try to protect Terri and all Floridians from euthanasia by omission. Columba and I will keep Terri and her family in our prayers this weekend," he added.
