EJ Dionne Nails it in WaPo: "A Thin View of Life"
an excerpt:

" How has Terri Schiavo's care been financed? The available information suggests that some of the money came from one of those much-derided medical malpractice lawsuits and that the drugs she needs have been paid for by Medicaid.

The irony has not been lost on Democrats. Just a few days after most Republicans in both houses of Congress had supported cuts in federal funding of Medicaid, here they were erring "on the side of life" in a single case. The same issue has come up here in Florida, where Gov. Jeb Bush, a strong supporter of keeping Schiavo alive, has been proposing cuts in Medicaid spending.

Republicans cry foul when any link is made between the Schiavo question and the Medicaid question. "The fact that they're tying a life issue to the budget process shows just how disconnected Democrats are to reality," harrumphed Dan Allen, a spokesman for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

Forgive me, Mr. Allen, I know you're just doing your job, but what's disconnected from reality is refusing to accept the idea that health care is about life issues and money issues.

An eloquent bitch-slap to the Republican Pander Bears!

1. Yeah, ain't it a bitch when dems try to inject a little reality into an
issue. How dare they mention the fact that a lawsuit and a program that they want to destroy has kept the person that they have shamefully used for propaganda and to push their own agenda alive.

6. Me too. Scratchin' my head on that one.
I don't think of E.J. as our MOST ardent progressive, but I don't remember any outright Bush shilling.

Please, enlighten us.

7. maybe not bush, but he was part of the get bill clique
i only recall dionne's name from 'marcel' dionne, hockey great....as to detail of his malfeasance, i'll have to google and ask jeeves etc: but remember, he is washpost, and unlike paul k at the nytimes, dionne sorta blends in with the bushcrowd, if he's noticed at all, and that means he's 'probably' a bushloving mediawhore. Nevertheless, i respect you 2 enough to qualify any criticism of 'ej' by saying it's guilt by association and barely remembered disgust at something he wrote long ago.....
and, huck finn's pappy turned over a new leaf, so who's to say mr dionne didn't!

3. The Right-Wing Frivolous Lawsuits
All of the frivolous appeals and lawsuits filed by Mrs. Schiavo's parents have been paid for by the same great right-wing conspiracy that funded the Clinton witch-hunt. Does anyone really believe that Terri spoke to her parents this week about her condition other than the right-wing attorneys who are filing these frivolous lawsuits?
