College Conservatives raffle off an assault rifle
From the Daily Illini (University of Illinois), a completely baffling story:

The Orange and Blue Observer (OBO), a conservative political journal at the University, staged a controversial raffle Thursday - first prize was an AK-47 assault rifle.

<snip>

The OBO, a registered student organization, normally publishes three times a school year with funding from the Student Organization Resource Fee (SORF)... However, this year the SORF board only gave the journal enough funding to publish two issues.

The OBO used the raffle to help fund their paper...the raffle was meant to raise awareness about the benefits of gun ownership.

1. So, what about the waiting period and background checks?
Or is this another loophole?

5. From the article:
"To enter the raffle, participants paid $5 and had to state that they had a Firearms Ownership Identification Document (FOID). If a participant didn't have a FOID, the OBO provided applications for the participants."

8. from the article
To enter the raffle, participants paid $5 and had to state that they had a Firearms Ownership Identification Document (FOID). If a participant didn't have a FOID, the OBO provided applications for the participants.

A FOID is required in Illinois to buy or possess a firearm, according to the Illinois State Police Web site.

http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearmsfaq.cfm

What is a FOID card?
The FOID card was created in 1968, by the FOID Act, as a way to identify those persons eligible to possess and acquire firearms and firearm ammunition as part of a public safety initiative in the State of Illinois.

Who needs a FOID card?
Unless specifically exempted by statute, any Illinois resident who acquires or possesses firearm or firearm ammunition within the State must have in their possession a valid Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card issued in his or her name.

3. I highly doubt they raffled off an AK-47
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 02:06 PM by davepc
Since AK-47's are class III firearms, and require among other things to posses, a FBI backround check, fingerprints on file with the FBI, a waiver for the ATF to come into the place where you store it and inspect it at any time they deem proper, and a letter of authorization to possesses it signed by the chief Law Enforcement officer in the jurisdiction (chief of police, sheriff, etc). Oh, the rifle themselves cost up wards of $20,000.

I bet what they raffled off was a semi-automatic knock off clone that does a good job of LOOKING like an AK-47, but falls way short of performing like one.

4. Cool
Though it could not have been a real AK-47 (meaning selective fire) so it could not have been an assault rifle.

The right to own personal weapons for defense of ones life and liberties is a progressive value.

14. True, there are handguns,
But shorter longer guns are a viable alternative to handguns for those who are uncomfortable with the recoil.

21. Feeling that weapons are the only way to defend one's life and liberty..
is a personality disorder not shared by everyone. It is rooted in a sense
of powerlessness, and a low level of negotiation and relationship skills,
IMO.

9. the news
The funny thing is, I teach Economics at UI, and as students filed into my three classes, I talked with them about the article. As I read the article to them, the responses were all either laughs and eye-rolling or else dumbfounded jaw-dropping.

And an intro Econ class is hardly a liberal cross-section of the school's population. This was a publicity stunt, of course, but I just don't understand how this possibly helps whatever their cause is.

Minuteman Project: A grotesque caricature of patriotism
By: CHRISTIAN RAMIREZ

<snip> According to the Arizona Daily Star, Chris Simcox, a leader of the Minuteman Project, was convicted on federal weapons charges for practices similar to those that the Minutemen will engage in for the month of April.

Another key figure among the so-called Minutemen is Roger Barnett, who in March 2004 kicked a woman and shouted obscenities at her while holding her at gunpoint in a remote location along the Arizona-Mexico border. In October 2004, Barnett was accused of pointing an AR-15 assault-rifle at a group of two men and three children, all U.S. citizens, because apparently Barnett confused the group with "illegal aliens." <snip>
