Students need to be more radical in campus affairs (News-Rec U Cincinnati)
<snip> Whether it is something as large as tuition hikes or as small as a drab student union, we can fix these problems and find solutions as individuals or as groups.

For example, with tuition hikes, we as students have got to understand that Ohio politicians are able to get away with cutting funds for higher education not just because we don't vote as much as baby boomers, but because we don't put real pressure on our politicians and administrators. We as students may not have the capital our parents have, but we do have our youth.

As students, we must take radical steps for ensuring that these problems don't come up again. A general student strike, occupying random areas or simply refusing to buy textbooks for our classes, would cause havoc at any university. These are steps ensure that the bureaucrats in Columbus know that we are mad.

We need to get our professors involved in our struggles. After all, these are the people that teach us. After students, they are the most powerful constituency at a university. By allying ourselves with faculty members, we will become a powerful force. <snip>

1. to keep students from these issues:1.toss them money for groups, then have

them use all their time fighting each other over which studnt group gets how much. They forget about the Admin and Legislature.

2. rename the student union,

student government association SGA.

This makes them think the group exists to govern students, not unite them. IT is to reign over students.
It's attention is directed down, never up.

PS nice touch is to have the bundle of money they are to fight over,

come direct from them at registration, not fm the college's budget.

I have always found it strange to see retired Generals named as college presidents. Military is the polar opposite of inquiring minds. Take orders , is not what scientific research is about. Newton would still be the text.

2. Students can still organize effectively in the circumstances you describe.
There's alway an organizational learning curve, of course. But the name of the game is: pick your fights and raise money yourselves that you can spend without restriction.

3. Where are
the student movements to protest the militarization of our society- campuses being a part of that. Where are the students demanding schools get going with a green agenda for the school itself starting with 'green' buildings.

At present it's the three C's- Corporatism, Consumerism, Conformity. That is especially true at the 'elite' universities where the future elites are trained. There may not be the future they believe to be awaiting them. I'm stunned at how ill-informed the 'best and brightest' are.
