The worst president in history

by Jack Lessenberry
9/17/2003

A Canadian politician once told me that if you put a frog in a pot of water and slowly increase the temperature a degree at a time, Mr. Hoppy would be completely cooked before he realized anything was wrong. I have no idea whether that is actually true for amphibians. But it does seem to be true for the American people.

Without exaggeration, George W. Bush, light blue tie, silly smirk and all, is the worst president this nation has ever had. Yes, I know my history. Richard Nixon was a nasty crook, Warren Harding was a slob, U.S. Grant’s administration was hugely corrupt, and James Buchanan failed to do anything to stop secession.

They were all bad, but nobody has done as much to ruin the nation and mess up the world as the reformed drunken frat boy whose daddy failed at the job before him.

You can’t blame the voters too much; most of them didn’t even want him. He had to be inserted into the Oval Office by right-wing partisans on the U.S. Supreme Court after the people narrowly chose Al Gore.

1. This is a GREAT rant!
I know it's not in a mainstream paper, but I sure hope it wakes at least a few more people up.

4. It may not be mainstream
But it has huge circulation and damn near everyone under the age of 40 in south east Michigan picks it up every week.

Lessenberry is an excellent columnist. He knows his stuff.

6. Thanks, that's good to know.
I'm not familiar with Lessenberry, but I'm definitely going to look him up and see what else he's written.

with a savagery perhaps surpassing their previous sycophancy?

10. sad but true story . . .
I was in my doctor's office a few weeks back, and happened to mention to the receptionist (we're friends) that I thought Bush would indeed go down in history as the worst president ever. The second receptionist, who I don't know well, commented that she thought that Bush was doing a really good job, and did I really think that he was worse than Clinton?!?

So there was my opening, and the mind was racing with everything I could have said . . . but I said nothing. Because I remembered that this woman had lost her only son at the World Trade Center, and I just didn't want to get into a discussion that might cause her more pain. What's tragic is that she and the other families, if anyone, SHOULD know about all the shit that Bush has pulled . . . but it's certainly not up to someone like me, a casual acquaintance at best, to try to convince her. Sad . . .
