Bill Kristol needs to take his crystal ball in for declouding.
Yesterday, on a regular Fox News segment called (get this)
"Kristol Clear"--I prefer my own title, "Kristol Meth"--the Son of Irving speculated that Bush might have some big news to drop at his press conference, such as the announcement that Chief Rehnquist was stepping down, or perhaps some major development on the terrorist front. Kristol said it seemed unlikely that Bush would preempt prime-time shows like The O.C. and Will & Grace--programs which Kristol prissily stipulated that he didn't watch but his children were into--simply to recap more forcefully his arguments for Soc Sec reform and an energy bill.
Given Kristol's insider coziness with the Beltway illuminati, I thought he might have been given a heads-up denied his fellow hacks.
But no, apart from making his hazy Soc Sec proposal a little less hazy (if no more attractive), Bush was Robo-President last night, giving a routine rendition of routine talking points at a press conference that looked and sounded vacuum-sealed. It wasn't a disastrous performance, like his press con before the Iraq invasion. He comported himself like the moderate many of us believed him to be was when he first took office in 2001, before his radical rightwing messianism muscled out of the closet in superhero tights. It was as if there was a conscious decision to modulate his tone and gestures, to subdue the hand-jab assertions and "I said what I meant, and I meant what I said" declarations. He was not his usual cocky, defiant self, maybe because he wished he watching Will & Grace too, he gets such a kick out of Karen.
