Prog Net Politics Takes Big Hit as MEETUP Starts Charging Fees

PROGRESSIVE 'NET POLITICS TAKES A BIG HIT AS MEETUP STARTS CHARGING FEES
by Doug Ireland

The use of the Internet as a major tool for progressive, grassroots organizing took a major hit when Meetup announced on April 12 that it will begin charging for its services. You'll recall the crucial role Meetup played in the Dean and Kucinich campaigns last year, and in anti-war organizing as well. That sort of thing is now seriously endangered by Meetup's decision to go for the money....

1. Meetup seriously jumped the shark
when they changed their user interface. It became MUCH harder to use and we had a real problem with the way they divided up people among the different meetup groups only two months before the election. I personally wonder if their so-called "upgrade" was really in order to torpedo us progressives.

Anyway, after the upgrade I found it harder and harder to care about their stuff. At this point it's not as much of a loss as it would have been.

2. I quit looking at them when they didn't allow meetups except
in large city areas. Not much good for people in rural areas.

4. Amen. That and more.
I hated the way they ran that thing, AND their software which was simply inscrutable to me. I hope they just fold up and wither away.

3. Can't we get our own service up and running?
Through DFA or PDA, perhaps?

5. DFA may do that.
From here:

Make sure you have a current list of the active members of your group. Over the next few months, DFA may transition Meetups away from Meetup.com to a new tool on DFA's website. During this transition period, it is critical for you to compile a list of the active members of your group so you can contact your members without Meetup.com's website.
