Rethinking the D-Word: Does the Military Really Instill Discipline?
Rethinking the D-Word: Does the Military Really Instill Discipline?
by Susan Van Haitsma

As my military veteran colleague and I arranged our literature table near the high school cafeteria with materials about alternatives to military service, the armed police officers assigned to the school were our first customers. They glanced at our brochures, gave us a look that said, “You people mean well, but get real,” and launched the D-word argument we've come to expect wherever we go....

1. My husband had a perfect 20 year record
As he said he was never caught doing anything they said not to do. Be sure to see that in the right frame of mind.

2. They instill obedience to orders with punishment for disobedience.
I don't think I would call that discipline.

3. From the current evidence

I don't think it's working, now granted I went through BCT and AIT in 1978, when the nicest names they had for us trainees was maggot!!!

But I do know that we were given classes on the Geneva Conventions, and the Laws of Land Warfare. And that I received refresher courses
at every duty station that I was assigned too. That was from 1978 to 1991, and they even gave us classes during our processing before being sent over for Desert Storm.

It seems to me that discipline is the one thing that's lacking in the military today. When a Brigade commander can take hostages, and is looked upon as a hero, or when MP's and their clerks abuse and torture detainees, or when a Marine murders a wounded Iraqi, that would indicate that discipline is the one thing that seems to be
either getting short shrifted or not being instilled at all.

Perhaps the only discipline that is being taught, is how to lead your target.
