In the smouldering ruins of Berlin, Elena Rzhevskaya stooped by a radio to hear the announcement of the Nazis' final capitulation, a small box clutched to her side. It was 8 May 1945 and at Karls-horst, on the edge of the city, the German high command had surrendered to Russian, British and American forces.

But the young interpreter from Soviet military reconnaissance was subdued as her comrades across the city broke into wild celebrations. Tucked in the satin-lined box she was clutching were the flesh-specked jawbones of Adolf Hitler, wrenched from his corpse just hours earlier by a Russian pathologist.

A burnt body thought to be the Fuhrer's had been found by a Red Army soldier near his bunker days before, but Joseph Stalin ordered the discovery be concealed. 'Only two officers knew what I was carrying and I had to keep my tongue,' Rzhevskaya, 85, told The Observer in a rare interview at her Moscow apartment. Hitler's teeth would be key to proving the corpse was his and only a select few knew what had been entrusted to Rzhevskaya.

I don't know about grownups, but as a kid I found this 'possibility' very scary

Through that CIA/OSS Bushevik Op, the Bushes and their pals were able to "rescue" many of their Nazi chums under the guise of "fighting Communism".

But what they actually did was allow the virus to survive and incubate in America, which actually lasted quite a bit longer than I would have though, given the circumstances and the overt executions of JFK, RFK, and MLK.

Looking back, the fact that the Old Republic even lasted until 2000 was something of a minor miracle.

I think the stories both arose from and perpetuated the idea of Hitler as something other than a mostly ordinary human. It is morally more comfortable to make of Hitler some kind of boogeyman, possessed of a mystical power that will make people follow him or his ghost or his reincarnation or his clone to do unspeakably evil deeds. People want to believe that there was something unique to the man, and the movement, so that they do not have to believe that not only could a Nazi-like regime arise again in the world, but that any person struggling now could be the future Hitler, and that any of us might one day be swept up in something that "seemed right at the time".

I find it ironic that the enemies of Hitler have assigned to him in their imaginations so much power. We hear of Hitler's war and Hitler's Secret Weapons, as if there were one guy out there fighting the whole world. We use Hitler's name to stand for the entire Third Reich, reinforcing the idea of the absolute power of the Leader. We maintain when we do this the construct of the Leader. By this I do not intend the Leader idea as part of formal National Socialism, not the Leader on paper, not the Leader as dictator. I mean by this the dark Leader, perceived as external to the self, to which responsibility for immoral action can be assigned and which can serve as explanation for suffering and evil. I mean the Leader seen from a distance or not at all, the ultimate authority to whom ordinary people willingly submitted. We are creating a secular Satan out of Hitler, a mystical tempter in a brown shirt who seduces people into a particular kind of evil.

I think it's about time to lay that construct to rest, personally. I think it's time we stopped looking for "another Hitler" under the bed or in the closet, and started looking inward for the follower in each of us.

But the followers are a rather interesting group as well. The career climbing cynics. The jailers, executioners and torturers. The people who keep the bombers running on time. These are all ordinary people you might find in your own neighborhood.

The analytic ability of most people is usually only extended to what puts bread on the table. Outside of that small area, their mind is venal bowl of mush full of resentments, myths, prejudices, misrepresentations and other imaginings. Following the leader and his stereotypical mythicism ironcally provides them with a certain place in the world. Protypical cultists and demagogues like Pat Robertson, John Hagee, and Tom Delay are indispensable supporters of dictatorship.
