NEWS ITEM: The pastor of a Baptist church in Waynesville, N.C. told his congregation last fall that those among them who didn’t plan to vote for Republican incumbent George W. Bush should repent or resign from the church.
Nine adults late last week said they were forced out of the small church located 125 miles from Charlotte. The Rev. Chan Chandler called his edict a “misunderstanding,” according to an Associated Press dispatch. By Wednesday, Chandler resigned, reported the Asheville Citizen-Times.
Welcome to the United States of fascism? Chandler folded, but what emboldened him to tell people how to think or act?
For weeks, hasn’t it seemed that intimidation and bullying by leaders of the political party in power is poisoning the atmosphere? Republicans control both houses of Congress and the presidency, or executive branch. The Supreme Court is independent, yet it leans oh-so-slightly to the right. <snip>
