Atheists Surround Courthouse as Statue Showdown Continues
Although the satire is quite on the mark, I find it worthy of comment that the Madison-based group Freedom From Religion was not mentioned, if only for literary value. This national organization has been at the forefront of church-state separation issues, instigating lawsuits over the 10 Commandments decades ago and still going strong. FFRF has been instrumental in trying to remove religious icons from the state capitol building in Madison on a regular basis.

Annie Laurie Gaylor is the editor of Freethought Today and Ann Nichols Gaylor is the President of FFRF. Here is the website, as of interest: http://www.ffrf.org/

1. Atheists Surround Courthouse as Statue Showdown Continues
As a life long non-theist who has raised children in a non-theist household, I see the A in Atheist as standing for "anti". Perhaps if a coherent plan for living a non-theist life was presented in a rational yet forceful manner, more actual political power and social acceptance could be gained by non-theists. Am I the only person who saw the amazing opportunity that Judge Moore presented?

“Mayor Cieslewicz vows to remain undeterred. If the statue is removed, he said, "I'll be going to Washington to demand that both the statue and the plaque be placed in the United States Capitol."”

What if he had demanded that his statue be placed next to Judge Moore’s? My guess is that Moore's statue would have been gone overnight.

achiral means anti-chiral...
acephalous beasties stand firmly against heads.
agamic reproducers will never give in to the gametes!

and, of course, agnostics will fight to the bitter end against gnosis.

that is, apparently, how "you see it?"

6. fight? maby. I just understand the rules.
For me the Atheist, the A has never stood for anti, but there is a very sizeable chunk of people who do see and perceive Atheism as anti-religion. They can’t grasp absence of religion, so Atheism is viewed as hostile to them. Ever read anything positive about Atheism in a religious text, or a kid’s school book?

Gnosis- interesting. Sounds like a primitive self grasp on what’s really happening. A good intuitive thought given the science and known facts of the time.
Hard wiring lies at the root cause of spiritual belief, they can’t help themselves. If you’d like I’ll explain a game I played with my then small son to present him with the facts so he could make up his own mind about beliefs.

Thanks for the response, I learned something and made more than one trip to the dictionary!
Here’s a great site, numbers and facts and only numbers and facts. Notice the number of open Atheists and non-Judeo-Christians in the halls of power.

7. A- is not IM- is not ANTI-
But try telling that to people when you try to describe yourself as amoral, not immoral. (A- Without, -IM Not, ANTI- Against for you etymology buffs out there, all both of you ;-)

I am a semi-evangelical for the term "bright" in lieu of atheist, agnostic, free-thinker, humanist, non-theist, etc (or in addition to).
See http://www.the-brights.net/ for more info.

The constituency has no cohesion and thus no political voice. I don't know if calling ourselves brights will help, but at least somebody is thinking about the fact that getting the aforementioned groups to come together for a common cause is like herding cats. Being a bright myself, it would definitely amuse me to see a crowd (more than 10) of brights gathered in protest. Therein lies the satire to me.

Vale,

8. Brights
I've pondered an alternative title myself. If asked what a Bright is one can say, “A Bright conquers” Conquers what? “Instinct with intellect.” :-)
Yes the gatherings seem interesting, I attended an atheist meeting once, there may have been a Bright or two there, (takes much discourse to find one, need to work on that. What’s a quick way to determine Brightness?), there was much talk of spirituality. Boring and disappointing.
I’ll definitely spend some time at the site, thank you for the link.

11. Paine is NOT an atheist
Anyone who has bothered to read the Age of Reason would know that Thomas Paine was not an Atheist. In chapter one he states that he believes in one God and no more.

13. Tis true
But he wasn't a xtian either. He was a Deist.

Found this on the subject over at the secweb:
Sec Web link

They have a lot more on the topic, but this one was short and sweet. (for the Secweb, anyway). Though dated at 1906, it still seems relevant.
