Unscrambling Bushisms After Major Brain Assault
Bushs' speech tonight sounded like a committee had put too many squawking points into a blender and got drunk while they were playing with the buttons. The slurry of words that emanated from our illustrious dimson simultaneously mangled truth and make my head hurt. The painfully contorted doublespeak defies comprehension. I had to compose this attempt at de-contorsion to dull the pain.

De-contorsion #1 Perz says: "The soldiers and families of Fort Bragg have contributed mightily to our efforts to secure our country and promote peace."
Truth: War is Peace: this was simple classic Orwell, not too difficult. We have been waging war (not peace) in Iraq. You don't run up this kind of body count and devastation by promoting peace. We had a chance to promote peace by going through the UN. Bush sabotaged that. The soldiers are now yearning for peace so let's try to confuse them by linking their yearning to the administration efforts. The soldiers would also like to see our country more secure, but the administration efforts have worked against that left and right.

De-contortion #2:
Prez says: "The terrorists who attacked us and the terrorists we face murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent."
Truth: This is a classic case of blame your opponent for the terrible things that you are doing, or a case of the pot calling the kettle a pot. The Neocon terrorist are the ones who are murdering in the name of their totalitarian ideology which truly hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent. The only freedom they treasure is for the oligarchy to trample the rights of everyone else. And tolerance? How about tolerance for gays and lesbians. And who isn't that despises all dissent? Look what the Bush administration has done to punish the tepid dissent from Dan Rather, Newsweek and PBS.

De-contortion #3:
Prez says: "Their aim is to remake the Middle East in their own grim image of tyranny and oppression by toppling governments, driving us out of the region and exporting terror."
Truth: It has been the aim of the administration to remake the Middle East in their own grim image of neocon tyranny and oppression. And just who was responsible for toppling governments? I'll give you a clue: they called it "regime change". Is it any surprise that the objects of such attention want to drive us out of their region. And what about the terror of depleted uranium, napalm, bombed out cities, civilian casualties and a devastated infrastructure. That has been the terror that the Bush administration has unleashed in Afghanistan and Iraq at which it threatens to unleash in Iran, North Korea, Syria. And don't forget the years of terror and death squads in Central and South America, is specially what we are doing in Colombia right now.

De-contortion #4:
Prez says: "The terrorists believe that free societies are essentially corrupt and decadent"
Truth: Just look at the bloody trail of free societies that this administration has smashed or tried to smash while calling them corrupt and decadent: Haiti and Venezuela. Remember that Haiti had a duly elected democracy. You know democracy: the thing Bush claims that he wants to spread all over the world. That's why we had to crush the democracy in Haiti and tried to crush it in Venezuela. Don't forget our massive military assistance to Colombia for political repression and the suppression of real democracy.

De-contortion #5:
Prez says: "After September 11, I made a commitment to the American people: This nation will not wait to be attacked again. We will take the fight to the enemy. We will defend our freedom."
Truth: Prez really means that he is using 9-11 as a pretext to invade who ever he wants, whenever he wants and destroy international law in the process. And have you noticed what he is doing to "our freedom"? How about sneak and peek searches, voter intimidation, bankruptcy protection, Free Press, reproductive rights, affirmative action, habeas corpus, and now the right of eminent domain. With protection like this, our freedoms don't need any enemies.

De-contortion #6
Prez says: "Many terrorists who kill innocent men, women and children on the streets of Baghdad are followers of the same murderous ideology that took the lives of our citizens in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
Truth: Shock and Awe Bombing, murderous sanctions, depleted uranium, destruction of cities (to save them), napalm bombing and free fire zones are what are killing innocent men and women and children in Iraq as are the predictable countermeasures of the insurgency. Since this administration stonewalled and stymied the 9-11 Commission, we will never know exactly who had the murderous ideology that took the lives of our citizens in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. But if you're curious, just do a poll out the residents in New York City. There is a creepy feeling that the commander in chief and his administration know a lot more than they are telling.

De-contortion #7
Prez says: "We either deal with terrorism and this extremism abroad, or we deal with it when it comes to us."
Truth: Perhaps if we were not exporting our own brand of terrorism and extremism abroad we would not have to deal with it when it comes to us.

De-contortion #8
Prez says: "Our mission in Iraq is clear. We are hunting down the terrorists. We are helping Iraqis build a free nation that is an ally in the war on terror. We are advancing freedom in the broader Middle East. We are removing a source of violence and instability and laying the foundation of peace for our children and our grandchildren"
Truth: our mission in Iraq is geopolitical conquest and monopolization of oil resources. We are hunting down terrorists, we are creating them. We aren't helping Iraqis build a free nation, we are robbing them blind. We aren't advancing freedom in the broader Middle East, we are in citing fundamentalist retrenchment. And we are inflaming the source of violence and instability and laying the foundation for perpetual war for our children and grandchildren.

De-contortion #9
Prez says: "violence and bloodshed...suffering. Is the sacrifice worth it? It is worth it, and it is vital to the future security of our country.
Truth: None of the violence, bloodshed or suffering was at all necessary except perhaps to defend the financial security of Bush's financial backers. We could build some real security in this country, but the administration's shortsighted energy policy makes that a pipe dream.

De-contortion #10
Prez says: "Our military reports that we have killed or captured hundreds of foreign fighters in Iraq who have come from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and other nations
Truth: Most of the resistance is coming from the Iraqis themselves and the biggest contingent of "foreign fighters" is the so-called coalition of the willing.

De-contortion #11
Prez says: "The terrorists know that the outcome will leave them emboldened or defeated. So they are waging a campaign of murder and destruction. And there is no limit to the innocent lives they are willing to take.
Truth: It is our president who fears being defeated rather than emboldened and therefore continues waging a campaign of murder and destruction. And there has been no limit to the innocent lives that He is willing to take.

De-contortion #12
Prez says: "The lesson of this experience is clear: The terrorists can kill the innocent but they cannot stop the advance of freedom.
Truth: As was the case in Vietnam, we can kill the innocent, but we can't stop the resistance to our invasion.

De-contortion #14
Prez says: "our coalition's goal in Iraq...America's mission in Iraq is to defeat an enemy and give strength to a friend, a free, representative government that is an ally in the war on terror and a beacon of hope in a part of the world that is desperate for reform."
Truth: our goal is to defeat the people of Iraq and take their oil. Iraq is hardly a beacon of hope for anybody right now as the only desperation for "reform" are the embattled neocons.

De-contortion #15
Prez says: "more than 8 million Iraqi men and women voted in elections that were free and fair and took place on time."
Truth: Bush wouldn't recognize a free and fair election if it bit him on the ass!

De-contortion #16
Prez says: "We are improving roads and schools and health clinics and working to improve basic services like sanitation, electricity and water."
Truth: The infrastructure is in hopeless shambles thanks in part to our intentional "pre war" "softening" of the infrastructure and our continual destruction of whole cities to root out a few resistors. And then of course there's the graft. Halliburton and the others have made a fortune off this war and the so-called reconstruction effort. Deep Throat recommended that we follow the money: I wonder how much of it went back into the campaign war chests of Bush and his cronies.

De-contortion #17
Prez says: "Like free people everywhere, Iraqis want to be defended by their own countrymen, and we are helping Iraqis assume those duties."
Truth: If we've respected the desire of the Iraqis to be defended by their own countrymen than we would get the hell out of their country. We are paying some otherwise unemployed Iraqis to carry out our military agenda, not the aspirations of the Iraqi people. If Iraqis were truly free, then the majority could have all of the invaders go back home to coalition land.

De-contortion #18
Prez says: "we have a clear path forward"
Truth: We don't know what the hell we are doing in Iraq so we will continue destroying the country and any hope for freedom and reconstruction.

De-contortion #19
Prez says: "The principal task of our military is to find and defeat the terrorists and that is why we are on the offense"
Truth: The administration has let all of the terrorist escape, has failed to secure even one conviction and has utterly failed in the war on terrorism. The administration is on the offense against people who were fighting the coalition of the killing.

De-contortion #20
Prez says: "We have learned that Iraqis are courageous and that they need additional skills. That is why a major part of our mission is to train them so they can do the fighting and our troops can come home." "We will stay in Iraq as long as we are needed and not a day longer."
Truth: Bush wants to claim that our troops are coming home. Then why are we building 14 new military bases in Iraq? The administration's goal is to continue to occupy Iraq for ever and continue to fabricate justifications for doing just that. We won't be leaving on until the last drop of oil trickles down the pipeline.

De-contortion #21
Prez says: "If our commanders on the ground say we need more troops, I will send them."
Truth: If our commanders said we needed more troops, Bush would fire the commanders, just like he has in the past.

De-contortion #22
Prez says: "The Iraqi people are emerging from decades of tyranny and oppression. Under the regime of Saddam Hussein, the Shia and Kurds were brutally oppressed and the vast majority of Sunni Arabs were also denied their basic rights, while senior regime officials enjoyed the privileges of unchecked power."
Truth: The US bankrolled the oppression, the tyranny, and the brutality as long as it's suited their geopolitical strategies. The senior regime officials "enjoyed the privileges of unchecked power" with the blessings and armaments from the US administration.

De-contortion #23
Prez says: "The next step is to write a good constitution that enshrines these freedoms in permanent law."
Truth: the main thing that will be enshrined in the new constitution will be the privatization of the oil industry. And just guess who will get the new contracts! Hint: look at the list of top Republican campaign contributors.

De-contortion #24
Prez says: "As Iraqis grow confident that the democratic progress they are making is real and permanent, more will join the political process. And as Iraqis see that their military can protect them, more will step forward with vital intelligence to help defeat the enemies of a free Iraq. The combination of political and military reform will lay a solid foundation for a free and stable Iraq."
Truth: Prez is hallucinating. This is an ideologically based high in the sky bit of wishful thinking that might be cute if so many people weren't dying.

De-contortion #25
Prez says: "As Iraqis make progress toward a free society, the effects are being felt beyond Iraq's borders. Before our coalition liberated Iraq, Libya was secretly pursuing nuclear weapons. Today the leader of Libya has given up his chemical and nuclear weapons programs. Across the broader Middle East, people are claiming their freedom. In the last few months, we have witnessed elections in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon. These elections are inspiring democratic reformers in places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Our strategy to defend ourselves and spread freedom is working. The rise of freedom in this vital region will eliminate the conditions that feed radicalism and ideologies of murder and make our nation safer."
Truth: Delusions of grandeur are a symptom of a deranged mind. Note how Bush omits the election in Iran which was a strong repudiation of Bush and his policies.

De-contortion #26
Prez says: "And we fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens"
Truth: We fight today for oil and global domination. Just maybe that's why there are a growing number of terrorist who would like to attack us. The president still is not telling the American people all that he knows about what really happened on 9/11 in terms of who really wants to attack our country and kill our citizens.

De-contortion #27
Prez says: "We know that if evil is not confronted, it gains in strength and audacity and returns to strike us again. We know that when the work is hard, the proper response is not retreat, it is courage. And we know that this great ideal of human freedom is entrusted to us in a special way and that the ideal of liberty is worth defending."
Truth: we know that if Bush is not confronted, he will gain in strength and audacity and return to strike us again. We know that when the work is hard for proper response is not retreat, it is courage, like the courage displayed by John Conyers in his hearings. And we know that this great ideal of human freedom is entrusted to us in a special way and that the ideal of liberty is worth defending from the neocon agenda whose only goal is to destroy it and substitute it with oligarchy and world domination.

De-contortion #28
Prez says: "I thank those of you who have re-enlisted in an hour when your country needs you."
Truth: Most of the troops are doing extra time because of stoploss orders which served as a backdoor draft. Enlistment is way down because the American people are no longer buying Bushs' lies, Orwellian contortions, obfuscations, and grandiose hallucinations nor those of his puppeteers and war profiteers.

De-contortion #29
Prez says: "When the history of this period is written, the liberation of Afghanistan and the liberation of Iraq will be remembered as great turning points in the story of freedom."
Truth: History will indeed see the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq as great turning points in the story of freedom, but the story will be about diminished freedom of the many and the concentration of power in the hands of a few.

There are too many other misstatements in the speech that need to be corrected, but I suspect that many others are in the process of doing that right now.

8. Thanks, but it was not beyond the call of duty. Someone had to call him
on all of his lies. I just didn't realize when I got started how many there would be. It was as if someone had tossed every lying bit off bumper sticker remnants into the air and let them fall randomly. We have to stay on his case 24/7 till we found him off this planet.

11. I think that street punk KKKarl has run out of tricks. He is just trying
to recycle all of the old ones. If last night's speech is any indication, all of the old ones have gone stale. We just need to keep up the pressure on pointing that out.

12. Great! When I was talking to bush last night
(muttering is more like it and I don't think he heard me as he just went on with his speech) I was saying so many of those things.

It was funny reading your post because it reminded me of my mutterings only you said it so much better. Thanks for putting it in words, it is just crazy world he speaks.

Neocons in this administration just so blatantly say things about them that is true about us. They are telling the truth in reverse.

From your first point on...I hear you. "Truth: War is Peace: this was simple classic Orwell"
When he talked about "promoting peace" it brought to mind lines of a poem I wrote in junior high that I hadn't thought of in years.
(Wanting peace, waging war.
Having too much,wanting more)

I even quoted it to him but he went on with his speech. How rude, he likes kid's stories after all.
He ignored all my points. You didn't. Thanks.

14. history
History will show that the illiterate Bush, who is completely ignorant of any history, particularly the history of the USA in the second half of the 20th Century, was doomed to repeat the mistakes of that era.

16. mon cat: brilliant analysis of speech needing about one de-contortion
per minute, roughly the number required whenever anyone from this Administration speaks on any subject. Sadly, none of this matters to any of those comprising W's base, but possibly a handful of W's more moderate supporters picked up on maybe even two or three statements needing de-contortion.

I have often wondered if Republicans lack the gene for irony. They so blithely and effortlessly project their own faults onto others, it's like they're not even capable of seeing the irony of their words. Or maybe it's just the gene for recognizing hypocrisy they lack.

21. Great post, Momcat.
When he said, "The terrorists who attacked us and the terrorists we face murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance and despises all dissent," I almost choked.

He was describing his own administration. Especially the part about DESPISING DISSENT. How dare he say that, considering how his gang have done their best to stifle any dissent?
