Sensenbrenner is going from bizarre to bonkers

Wisconsin Congressman F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., in a highly visible national role as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, is doing a great impression of anchorman Howard Beale going stark, raving mad in public.

One of the stranger scenes even for the deeply strange Sensenbrenner was replayed repeatedly not only on national news channels but also on comedy shows. That was on June 10 when he brusquely adjourned his committee in the middle of testimony against extending provisions of the Patriot Act because he didn't like what Democratic witnesses were saying about torture and abuse of prisoners being held by the U.S. without charges at Guantanamo Bay.

Unfortunately, the story was published the same day the Chicago Tribune exposed another example of Sensenbrenner's improper and arrogant abuse of power as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
... In his self-appointed position as tin god over the federal court system, Sensenbrenner wrote a five-page letter to the chief judge of the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in Chicago demanding that the court promptly increase the prison sentence to what Sensenbrenner thought it should be.

Dear Rep. Sensenbrenner,

I am aware of your sudden retreat from the Congressional Hearing room this morning. I hope you were not feeling poorly! I have watched the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee with great interest for the past number of months, and yourself prime among those.

You see, I had contacted you directly, as well as other GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee about disturbing reports I heard coming out about voting irregularities in Ohio. And, of course, those are within the purview of the House Judiciary Committee. I had hoped that as the head of the Committee you would convene hearings to determine what, if anything, had gone on. Oddly, not only did I not hear from you (or any GOP representatives for that matter), my phone calls were not taken because I was not from your Congressional District. It made me feel as if I must have my own representative (a Democrat, by the way) in order to inquire about anything that the Judiciary Committee would or would not do.

Though an obviously ill-informed friend of mine suggested that my total inability to speak to any GOP member of your committee was... well... in his words, "What you should bloody well expect. They're Republicans, and that is nothing more than Republican hubris! Though why they should take pride, overweening or otherwise, in being in the GOP is beyond my bloody own ken!", I was sure he was wrong.


You see, I persisted in my efforts to contact members of the Judiciary Committee and finally succeeded in contacting many members of the minority party. Particularly the fabulously helpful and diligent Member of Congress from Detroit, Michigan, Mr. John C. Conyers. Indeed, he even proceeded on his own to hold very informative hearings regarding vote fraud in Ohio. Had he not done so, I'm not sure any of some of the very important details would ever have come to light!

I spoke to my friend again a while after the Conyers Hearings and inquired why he thought that there were no Republicans with Rep. Conyers. He again offered an opinion that was erroneous, I think, saying "Because the B******s are weak, craven, and F*****g Sickos!!". (And I do apologize for his language. A bit crude to my way of thinking... I believe he is Irish, or Scottish, maybe). Anyway, later on, I decided it must be a language barrier, and that he meant to say that the GOP members must be having intestinal flu, or something, when he said "Sickos!!"

At any rate, even though when I asked him that clarifying question later, he replied, "No, no, its their guts. They're completely poxed!!" (though it sounded, because of the accent, like he was saying "No!! No!! It's that they've NO guts!! They're completely bollixed!!") that I knew there must be some sickness going around.


Today kind of confirmed the "illness" theory for me. What with John Zogby and representatives of Amnesty International present, I knew you would never just get up and rush out of the room except due to a gastro-intestinal emergency in which there was a possibility of soiling yourself. So, James, I *do* hope you (and all the GOP!) are feeling better.

And you might try some Imodium-AD, just in case, when you have those important meetings. I hear it works real well. And some of the White House Press Corps (formerly, anyway) swear by it! So you *do* take care of yourself. I have a feeling your country is going to be needing you real soon in your capacity as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee!


But, then again, if things don't work out the way you want, you should not have to worry. If that nice Rep. Conyers ever becomes head of that committee, he will do a real good job. He's such a kind, honorable and decent man, I'm sure he will do real good if he ever needs to fill your shoes!
