Washington Responds to 'Meth'
But Congress, feds shouldn't overreact to this drug

The pattern's familiar. A problem gathers steam in America and then boils over. Washington feels the heat and takes action.

That's what is happening with the highly destructive use of methamphetamine, or "meth." But Washington is in danger of repeating another pattern: acting too late, and inappropriately.

A meth resurgence began as a rural problem in the early 1990s, spreading from the West to the Midwest and South, and is now seeping into urban areas. The Bush administration has maintained that fighting marijuana is its anti-drug priority (on the grounds that it's a "gateway drug" that's widely used). But many local officials argue that meth should be its priority.

1. Why would they want to take away their voters favorite drug?
Redneck love meth, in case you hadn't heard.

3. Indeed they do
But the antidrug rhetoric continues to be all centered on "urban" crack cocaine problems.

4. I understand the joys of a flip answer
but this one hit a bit too close to home for me.

My niece is only 2 months out of rehab for "ice".

No rednecks in my family, either.

BTW, this is an old news story - it was on MSNC about 2 weeks ago.

My congressman, Mike McCaul, failed to respond to my request that he bump this up a notch. He's on the science committee - and another problem that we will face with this "homemade" drug is the toxic fall-out.

Sometimes they make it in deserted homes/shacks - and leave God knows what mess behind.

If you don't know about this drug, you should. Because what I've learned in the past 3 months scares the bejesus out of me. It's super addictive, super destructive, and lots of people (all ages) are using it - to lose weight quickly, to keep up the energy levels, or just for the FUN of it.

5. It is also a huge risk factor for sexual abuse of kids...
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 04:41 PM by antfarm
since the meth high is often strongly sexually charged. Counties that rescue kids of meth addicts are reporting strong concerns about what many of these kids have been exposed to. Hardcore meth addicts often bring home sex partners they don't know well, and they may not be capable of protecting their children against sexually charged "partners" on meth.

10. It is also the official drug of fascism.
Read-up on its history. Very enlightening. Learn how they put the 'blitz' in blitzkrieg.

6. Meth is rotting America from its core
Not to mention its teeth.

This serious as a heart-attack, and another ghastly consequence of the misguided drug war.

7. Those ghastly photos of meth faces
should be posted everywhere, along with information about how quickly addictive the drug is. The fear of becoming that ugly might just work with some kids who won't be reached otherwise.

9. Ah yes, it's all the drugs fault. If only there were no crystal meth
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 05:04 PM by ixion
everything would be okay.

C'mon. Does that really make sense?

America's core is rotten. I'll not debate that. But it's the fault of any one particular human creation. It's the fault of humans, and nothing more.

If it's not crystal meth, it's paint thinner or glue. It's not the fault of the substance, it's the fault of the user. And the use of something -- the taking of a substance into one's own body -- should never be an issue.

11. Meth is its own ballgame
Edited on Tue Jul-26-05 06:05 PM by Zorbuddha
I've travelled around the country, and the impact of meth is utterly and profoundly shocking. There has never been anything like this for its universal community degredation.

Your glib statement is naive, at best.

14. Bit of history
meth has been around for some time...was a problem in the 60's...remember "speed kills"?...that was meth...made by Hell Angels in San Joaquin Valley...still a big problem there...easy to make, nothing to import, deadly still.
