Efforts to rescue Bush's image swamped by criticism in Katrina's wake

WASHINGTON (CP) - It seems the intense political effort to rescue President George W. Bush's image is facing as many hurdles as the recovery from hurricane Katrina's devastation.

Assailed by critics as awkward, incompetent and insensitive, even racist, Bush has lost the strong footing he found in the dark days after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Even Republicans have contributed to widespread condemnation of the administration's painfully slow response to a tragedy that has left more than a million in the Gulf Coast region homeless and claimed the lives of untold thousands.

Some American political observers are predicting Bush, whose already low approval rating slipped further in Katrina's wake, will have difficulty climbing back in time to prevent Democrats from making inroads with voters during next year's congressional elections.

like a President, he failed to act like a human. Where was the sense of urgency in his actions, oh yeah, that's right, there was no action. I saw no concern for the American people in New Orleans. I saw no ANGST! I was more trouble about it, other Americans were more troubled about it then * was. What's up with that? I saw joking, laughing, smiling (lots of smiling :evilgrin: ) and patting people on the back for "doing a heck of a job." WHAT?

The one thing that would drive the nail in the coffin was on his own soil.

He's been able to do pretty much whatever he wanted around the world. But when the disaster hit in his own back yard, it was a different story.

He did what he's always done - sneered at suffering, laughing in the face of drowning and death.

Bush is terrified. He's scrambling, petrified at the thought of his people turning against him. It'll be an uphill battle all the way from here on out.

People will start galvanizing, massing in huge numbers, at his front door at Pennsylvania Avenue. I'll be one of them, shouting until I'm hoarse, and carrying a sign

your candyass "leader" had the entire arsenal of evacuation, search and rescue equipment and resources at his fingertips and did nothing for 5 days while dying people BEGGED for food and water. the arrogant, insensitive monster didn't get involved until it was about HIM! The whole world saw what a pathetic excuse for a "human being" he is. He posed for photos while people were dying around him, then took the fake food table with him!! whatta guy!
