There are faux pas and then there are fax faux pas. U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith's office has learned the latter lesson the hard way.
Last week, a staff member for the San Antonio Republican misdialed a fax number, causing a confidential memo intended for Karl Rove, President Bush's uberadviser, to apparently fall into Democratic hands. The five-paragraph note details Smith's thoughts on the ongoing immigration debate in Washington.
"Immigration needs to be considered in the context of (1) media bias, (2) animosity toward the President, and (3) feelings of the Republican base," the memo dated Sept. 14 reads.
Smith, an outspoken, conservative voice on immigration issues, goes on to suggest that the administration could gain a political advantage by focusing any new legislation on the strict enforcement of immigration laws.
"Liberals can easily and accurately be painted as opposing enforcement," Smith opines.
