...The recovery teams would split up in order to do their work, but they always had a buddy system. They would work in pairs to ensure one another's safety. Brenneman spoke kindly of his buddy, Tony of South Bend, Ind., who he referred to as "Dad."

When they had finished with recovering bodies at the end of the day, they would take them to the Superdome where they would be placed in refrigerated trucks. At that point in the process, a government agency known as D-Mort would take over...

...Brenneman returned to Liberal Sept. 18, but he was forbidden to discuss how many bodies he actually assisted with during that week of recovery...
