Sierra Club Applauds the Public Health and Environmental Equity Act

Statement of Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director

The Public Health and Environmental Equity Act introduced today by Senators John Kerry (D - MA) and Richard Durbin (D - IL) together with U.S. Representatives Hilda Solis (D - CA) and Alcee Hastings (D - FL) is a sensible and fair standard to set for the enormous task of rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. The cosponsors of this resolution understand that in the aftermath of a disaster like Katrina, we need to protect, not weaken, public health, environment and environmental justice laws.

Regardless of race and income level, all people need healthy places to live. The role of our federal government is to protect all citizens, but during this catastrophe it left minority and low-income communities out in the cold. Our leaders now have the opportunity to rectify this failure by ensuring that environmental laws are fairly implemented and enforced. It is time to put an end to the neglect and racism exposed by Katrina. The first step is to set high standards for the protection of all communities and the places they live.

In times of crisis, Americans depend on their leaders more than ever. Hurricane Katrina should not be used as a pretext to weaken, waive, or roll back Federal public health, environmental, and environmental justice laws and regulations. All of Congress must join the cosponsors of this resolution and defend the rights of all communities as the Gulf Coast recovers from Katrina.

2. This will never get past the republican congress......
republicans and neocons don't give a damn about the environment, specially when it interferes with making money.

3. So, are you saying that Dems should lay down and die?
Or should we propose good legislation and try and get some of the Repubs who are sensitive to environmental concerns to come aboard. (Chafee, Snowe, Collins and such.) Sme Rethugs do run in states where environmental issues are important. We might just be able to get them to sign on.

Or should we lay down and die?

6. From some of the descriptions of how bad the situation is
with petrochemicals and mold among other things, demanding that the environmental issues are handled correctly could determine the future of the area. Like you say we need to cheer on good legislation that, in this case, is far above politics as usual.

If we don't fight the Bush administration's greed on this issue what should we be doing. This also is an issue where we have the high ground. No one wants to live in a toxic country. For the religious, I know that Christianity requires people be good shepherds of the earth and Judaism requires a commitment to Tikkun Olam (repair of the world). I doubt there is any religious or ethical view that says it's ok to trash the world to make even more money for Halliburton.

Bush has become a lame duck. This is an issue worth pushing because it is important and because it is one where we should be able to win. How can the administration ask Americans to live in a toxic wasteland to save money for the wealthy - is that what Bush's legacy is going to be. Converting America from the world's only super power to a third world nation.

8. Have you seen recent pics of the water??
It is thick! and greenish-brownish!
Something needs to be done, and I am so fearful that Rove will
ignore
the toxicity in that water.

10. I saw a few of them - they really were sobering
Before seeing the pictures, it was hard to visualize how bad things really are. It is appauling that Bush put Rove in charge.

9. Then Kerry can point to their racism - environmental racism.
Environmental racism is a reality they won't want to talk about right now.
