Morford: God Does Not Want 16 Kids
God Does Not Want 16 Kids
Arkansas mom gives birth to a whole freakin' baseball team. How deeply should you cringe?

Who are you to judge? Who are you to say that the more than slightly creepy 39-year-old woman from Arkansas who just gave birth to her 16th child yes that's right 16 kids and try not to cringe in phantom vaginal pain when you say it, who are you to say Michelle Duggar is not more than a little unhinged and sad and lost?

And furthermore, who are you to suggest that her equally troubling husband -- whose name is, of course, Jim Bob and he's hankerin' to be a Republican senator and try not to wince in sociopolitical pain when you say that -- isn't more than a little numb to the real world, and that bringing 16 hungry mewling attention-deprived kids (and she wants more! Yay!) into this exhausted world zips right by "touching" and races right past "disturbing" and lurches its way, heaving and gasping and sweating from the karmic armpits, straight into "Oh my God, what the hell is wrong with you people?"

But that would be, you know, mean. Mean and callous to suggest that this might be the most disquieting photo you see all year, this bizarre Duggar family of 18 spotless white hyperreligious interchangeable people with alarmingly bad hair, the kids ranging in ages from 1 to 17, worse than those nuked Smurfs in that UNICEF commercial and worse than all the horrific rubble in Pakistan and worse than the cluster-bomb nightmare that is Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise having a child as they suck the skin from each other's Scientological faces and even worse than that huge 13-foot python which ate that six-foot alligator and then exploded.

(snip)

Is it wrong to notice how all the Duggar kids' names start with the letter J (Jeremiah and Josiah and Jedediah and Jesus, someone please stop them), and that if you study the above photo (or the even more disturbing family Web site) too closely you will become rashy and depressed and you will crave large quantities of alcohol and loud aggressive music to deflect the creeping feeling that this planet is devolving faster than you can suck the contents from a large bong? But I'm not judging.

8. I'll be surprised if they ALL become Christofascists
Come on the odds are against it - there are going to be a few hellraisers in that bunch. I'm sure we've seen the result of an attention-deprived child...if they don't feel enough attention at home then they'll go looking elsewhere for it. Unfortunately, what they ususally find isn't the right kind of attention.

4. Disgusting
I have no use for people like this. Those poor children. It's one thing to have that many kids back in the 1800's because so many children died so young, but to keep dropping them like 9 month turds in this day and age... is not fair to the rest of the planet!

Perhaps the point is this: Why does this sort of bizarre hyperbreeding only seem to afflict antiseptic megareligious families from the Midwest? In other words -- assuming Michelle and Jim Bob and their massive brood of cookie-cutter Christian kidbots will all be, as the charming photo suggests, never allowed near a decent pair of designer jeans or a tolerable haircut from a recent decade, and assuming that they will all be tragically encoded with the values of the homophobic asexual Christian right -- where are the forces that shall help neutralize their effect on the culture? Where is the counterbalance, to offset the damage?

38. In the family photos the kids are dressed alike
The girls have the same hairstyle.

Are they not allowed any individuality?
Self expression?

I wonder if any of them have any learning disabilities. I've known of large families in the orthodox Jewish community here and some of the younger kids have learning disabilities such as Down's Syndrome because mom continues to have kid after kid after kid well into her 40s.

At least this woman is 39, maybe she'll enter menopause soon!

39. I worked with a woman who is now in her 40s...she was one of
13 and began preparing meals and keeping house at 8. She was the oldest girl. As a result she had no social life at school and no friends.

As soon as she could she left the small town she grew up in and headed for St Louis where she has lived ever since.

She is very messed up to this day with alcohol and drug problems. She also has a habit of picking very screwed up men.

15. Probability is good that 1 or more of their children may revolt!
I read somewhere that the older children are all assigned a younger child to basically "parent" and that the older girls do ALL of the household laundry. (can you imagine doing laundry for 18 people?)

The children are basically the worker bees of the family while the mother and father supervise. Kind of like farm families that have numerous kids for the sole purpose of having an extra employee to do the farm work.

One or more of these 16 kids is going to realize something is wrong with this picture.

call for cans and boxes of processed crap in lists of less than 6 ingredients. Nothing too challenging for a 7 year old (girl of course) to cook for dinner.

18. what I'm waiting on is for his mistress to get jealous and come
forward. there was a lady on "what not to wear", that had big hear just like that. she kept saying over and over, don't cut my hair, my husband won't like that, my husband will be upset if you cut my hair, etc...

at the end of the show when they send her back home the first thing her husband says is "wow, at least now I'll be able to run my fingers through her hair".

these people are nuts, they are no better then the 19 hijackers on 9/11. and these are the repugs majority. very scary shit.

20. I predict that at least some of those
16 kids are going to rebel or have issues in ways that aren't going to be pretty. My husband's rightwing aunt, who raised her 6 in a strict Catholic household, has been witness to her eldest serving jailtime for setting fire to his wife's lover's car, the ongoing mental issues of another daughter, and most recently, the problems of another son who defied her to become a fundie minister and then acted out by cutting himself and claiming he was attacked by a black and a Hispanic. He's on probation.

Not saying all of these kids are headed for trouble, but wouldn't surprise me in the least. That kind of rigidity and conformity is creating a big pressure-cooker that one day will explode.

Where is, in other words, the funky tattooed intellectual poetess who, along with her genius anarchist husband, is popping out 16 funky progressive intellectually curious fashion-forward pagan offspring to answer the Duggar's squad of über-white future Wal-Mart shoppers? Where is the liberal, spiritualized, pro-sex flip side? Verily I say unto thee, it ain't lookin' good

This pegs me and my girlfriend a little too well.

Except we obviously arent going to have 16 kids and replace pagan with godless.

37. Wonder if each child gets hugged & kissed by the parents every day....
Somehow I rather doubt it.

Remember those psychology experiments from a long time ago in which chimpanzees (monkeys?) were "fed" by a statue (not really a statue but I can't think of what to call it) but they were never TOUCHED? As I recall, the chimps grew up and demonstrated some rather bizarre behaviors.

Doesn't bode well for these children.

41. Her birth canal
should have a speed limit imposed. Right when the baby is crowning, they call that the "ring of fire," but in her case it's probably the "ring of it stings a little--no, wait, no, no it does not."

On the plus side, there is no way that the kids will all grow up to be Repugs. Their parents will spend so little time with each of them that they will grow up resenting them for it and rejecting their values.

Or so I hope. If not, heck, we gotta get breedin'.

42. On the other hand
Ms. Duggar has the right to do with her body what she wishes.

I've always felt that pro-choice cuts both ways. If I support a woman's right to end her pregnancy, then I should also support her right to carry it to term -- and get pregnant again.

And I've heard somewhat similar complaints made by freeper-types, regarding "welfare mothers" who have a passel of kids. (Though granted, I've never heard of any having 16!)

Large families used to be quite common -- seem to remember a cousin with 18 kids, on a farm in Canada. Infant mortality was high and many hands were needed, since most North Americans lived on a farm.

Those days are long gone, of course. And the Duggars appear to be an anomaly -- every day I read about how more and more folks are living alone; people are marrying later, choosing not to marry at all, how so many more of us are choosing to go through life childless. (Myself included.)

Ergo, I doubt the Duggars are starting a trend, even among the right-winger, bible-thumper types.

no birth control used, but things have changed. now snall families 2-3 at most (many single moms also).--the Catholic church is still full and they still call themselves Catholic (and most are still connected to farming in some way or another) --- but most use birth control.
