Republicans are hiding behind Democrats and Clinton to justify the Iraq War

The Republicans admitted this week that no one believes them anymore. President Bush set the tone for the surrender on Veterans day, where he acknowledged that pro-peace activists were pointing out that he lied about the intelligence to get us into war. But instead of providing evidence that he didn't mislead the American people, he went ahead and blamed ... Democrats. Bush said:

"That's why more than a hundred Democrats in the House and the Senate -- who had access to the same intelligence -- voted to support removing Saddam Hussein from power."

Ohhhhh, I see. It was those darn Democrats, who you gave faked information to, that wanted war in Iraq. If it wasn't for the complacency of the opposition party, the majority would have never been able to start the war in Iraq; So don't blame Bush and his party!

This argument would make perfect sense to a pouty five-year old, but with mature adults it's an incredibly inane line of reasoning.

Here's a bit of news, George: The majority of Democrats in Congress voted against the Iraqi War Resolution. (IWR) The fact of the matter is that members of Congress did not have access to the same information as the President, and, as it is very well documented, the Democrats who did support IWR only did so when they were assured that all other avenues would be exhausted before the first bullet was fired.

To make the situation more ridiculous, the Republicans are also using former-President Bill Clinton as a justification for the Iraqi war. Donald Rumsfeld, in a Pentagon news briefing on November 15th said:

"we have people suggesting that the reason we're (in Iraq) was because this president decided to go in based on information that was unique to him. And it wasn't unique to him. The information that he based his decision on was the same information that President Clinton and the previous administration had."

Sheesh! Nearly 6 years into Bush's watch, and everything is still Clinton's fault!

Rumsfeld mentioned "Clinton" four times in his press-briefing; He only mentioned "Bush" twice. Listening to Rumsfeld's version of events, you'd think it was Clinton who pre-emptively invaded Iraq in March of 2003.

President Clinton had Haiti, Somalia, Bosnia and a flat-lined economy left for him by the previous Bush Administration; Yet, He never once blamed anyone for problems started by by others.

By pretending that the current President based his decision on evidence that Clinton had access to, Karl Rove is attempting to get Americans to forget about all the new "evidence" that was brought forth by the Bush Administration in the lead up to the Iraq War:
  • The yellow cake uranium evidence, that turned out to be a lie.
  • The balsa-wood airplanes that were supposed to send poison gas across the Atlantic, that turned out to be a lie.
  • The so-called "Mobile Chemical Weapons Factories" that Powell mentioned in his UN speech, that turned out to be a lie.

No one is blaming the current president for the legitimate information he had; Bush's crime occurred with the fabrication of evidence, and the subsequent cover-up, in order to mislead Congress into going to war with Iraq.

Republicans got us into this mess, and they are looking for a scape-goat in the Democratic party. This is a blatant display of immaturity on the part of conservatives and they should be ashamed of themselves.

It was conservatives, not Liberals, who wanted to change the name of french-fries to "freedom-fries" when Iraq was being debated in the UN. It was Republicans, not Democrats, who tried to equate opposition to the war with treason. It was a NeoConservative administration who said that they knew where the WMDs were in Iraq, not the Democratic party.

The basic strategy of the right-wing to defend their own actions that lead to war is best summed up as: "Waaaah! But Mom, all the other kids wanted to invade Iraq!"

I, for one, welcome Bush's attempts to justify the Iraqi War with what Clinton and other Democrats said. Doing so will remind the rest of America of what life was like under a real leader. Maybe they will also remember the impeachment proceedings and begin to compare the actions of these two presidents.

So go ahead Republicans! Hide behind a president that governed during a time of great prosperity. Hide behind the man who was big enough to admit his failing and to apologize. Hide behind the president who tried to tell you about Al Qaeda and Bin Laden, but you ignored him.

Keep on hiding, we Dems love it.
