REPUBLICANS DEMAND VOTE ON DROWNING OF KITTENS

Latest Attempt to Embarrass House Democrats

While few in the House expected the kitten-drowning resolution to pass, the House GOP leadership hoped that by calling for the floor vote they might force Democrats into an embarrassing position that they would have to explain to their constituents back home during the Thanksgiving recess.

“If the Democrats vote against the drowning of kittens, they’ll be seen as siding with the House Republicans on that issue and run the risk of appearing weak,” said one key aide to a House GOP leader. “However, if they oppose us, they leave themselves open to charges that the Democratic Party is the party of kitten-drowners – which, by the way, they are.”

As the vote approached, the ploy seemed to be working, as leading Democrats were taking great pains to explain how they planned to vote on the kitten-drowning resolution.

“I intend to abstain, but not because I in any way advocate the drowning of kittens,” said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Cal). “I believe, and have believed for some time, that kitten drowning is an issue better left to the states.”

I remember this happening with the puppy-strangling resolution of '96.

Typical.
