OK, This is Over a Week Old, But...

George F. Will could write a column on, say, the bloody Mesozoic Age and find a way to get a dig in at "liberals." Was this guy beaten up by hippies in his youth? Witness this bit from "IPod's Missed Manners":

Yes George, the need for rigorously correct spelling and punctuation is a "conservative sensibility." Well, can't argue with this. Just check the Hate Mailbag to be treated to a stream of letters all featuring impeccable grammar. Cripes, on those boards I occasional post on which have a reasonably proportionate number of right and left wingers, the greater the "conservative sensibility" of a given poster, the more atrocious the English.

Ah well, just the "Librul Ellleetest" in me talking, I guess...

Uhm, actually the men you list (I have never read James Lileks) are, dare I say, probably represent the better breed of conservative IMHO. OK, John Leo can be a real boob, but, dare I say, once in a blue moon he writes a reasonable column. (To be sure, usually after 20-30 tiring and predictable columns.) George F. Will is indeed a pompous ass, but, well some (RARE) days when he is not feeling well, he isn't bad. (E.g. his admirably unequivocal and damning criticism of the idiotic proposition of the flag-burning amendment.) As for David Brooks, er, perhaps primarily due to the 'good cop-bad cop' factor, his civility is refreshing.

Do realize I find most of the work by these men to be generally inane; George F. Will's pompous, 'false erudition' being particularly annoying. (Oh, you learned bastard, George! The parallels he drew between Iraq and Germany circa 1938 were utterly absurd to any reasonably serious student of history.) But...

Well, next to the likes of Anne Coulter and Michael Savage et al., they don't look so bad. Even though I disagree with them about 95% of the time.
