As ranted elsewhere, I'm currently on a long-term work assignment in Alexandria, Egypt.
Every morning at breakfast I read the
Egyptian Gazette, one of the "official" (government-controlled) papers.
This morning, on the same page as the editorial below, the Gazette ran a cartoon of Condi Rice in her famous "lecturing you ignorant proles" pose, with one finger jabbing the air.
Both hands were dripping blood. The right hand was labeled "Abu Gharaib" and the left was labeled "Guantanamo."
Then there was this little item...
"What does the new US Ambassador (to Egypt) want?" asks Soliman Gouda in Al-Wafd opposition daily.
"It seems as if he is eager to practice a kind of popular diplomacy with the Egyptians. None of his predecessors assumed such an attitude. He speaks Arabic fluently. He always said that he does not need a translator. Nor does he want anyone to interfere between him and the Egyptians."
"He has even attended important religious and popular events. I believe he is acting this way in order to improve the image of the US here, but he should be aware that any change of image cannot happen in Cairo, but in Washington."http://www.algomhuria.net.eg/gazette/3/
