Eyewitnesses refute official story in fatal shooting of passenger at Miami
Eyewitnesses refute official story in fatal shooting of passenger at Miami airport

By Kate Randall
10 December 2005

The Orlando Sentinel interviewed seven passengers who said Alpizar was silent as he bolted past them. “One thought he had taken the wrong flight. Another thought he was going to throw up,” the Sentinel reported.

Jorge A. Borrelli, an Orlando architect, stated, “I can tell you, he never said a thing in that airplane. He never called out he had a bomb. He never said a word from the point he passed me at Row 9.... He did not say a word to anybody.”

Borrelli said that Alpizar’s wife tried to reach her husband: “She was saying, ‘My husband’s sick. He’s sick. He’s bipolar. He didn’t take his medicine. It was my fault. I made him get on the plane. You know, we just came from a medical mission. Oh, my God! They’ve killed my husband!’ ”

Jorge Figueroa, a power-plant operator seated a few rows behind first class, told the Sentinel, “He wasn’t saying anything; he was just running. I said to myself, ‘It is probably a person who took the wrong plane.’ ”

Two teenagers seated in Row 26 concurred that Alpizar had said nothing as he ran down the aisle.

1. There's still way too much speculation floating in the news about this.
Way too much still unknown. I still want to know what the phone call was about that made the wife cry BEFORE her husband decided to leave the plane.

I don't think there were any reports that this man was saying anything about a bomb while he was still on the plane either. I sure got the impression that he said that when he was confronted in the jetway.

There's still way too much unknown to make any conclusions.

If you plan to take a neutral position, especially with all the conflicting reports, you should use the word allegedly. Otherwise, your statement could be misconstrued as fact.

3. This story has always deserved that 72 hour sniff test
to see how much of it smelled bad after people started coming forward.

I still think it's one of those "shit happens" situations in which no one was really at fault, just the collision of a stingy policy toward mental health combined with a world situation that's so fucked up that people will blow themselves up to make a political point combined with agents whose training has concentrated on reaction instead of analysis.

Sometimes there are tragedies. This is one of those times. My sympathy is for the widow. I can also spare some for the agent who killed a man essentially for being ill because his training gave him no other option.

I have extended family with bipolar disease. I can easily see them convincing themselves that somebody has planted a bomb in their luggage. I just hope they don't decide to fly any time soon.
