Helen Thomas: If Democrats only had some courage
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/251764_thomas13.html?dpfrom=thead

By HELEN THOMAS
HEARST NEWSPAPERS

WASHINGTON -- It's about time that the "me too" Democrats, particularly those in Congress who vote with the Republicans so often, stand up and be counted.

Too many Democrats are tiptoeing around the major issues facing our nation, afraid to venture out of the mainstream. This is a big mistake at a time when the nation is begging for true leadership.

Democrats with the courage to be leaders could have a field day pointing out that millions of Americans lack health insurance and that 37 million have fallen below the poverty line. Soon they will no longer be able to claim that theirs is a caring political party because they won't have evidence that this is true.

... The Democrats' lack of political courage has left voters with the choice of Republicans who call themselves that -- and Republicans who call themselves Democrats. The result: The GOP gets a free ride.

1. You know, this woman is the perfect person to lecture these cowards
on courage because she was speaking out against this administration, and paying for it, long before anyone (except maybe Michael Moore) was.

2. Well a couple come to mind, John Kerry and John Murtha along
with Barbara Boxer, Russ Feingold and Nancy Palossi. Oh, and Reed to a degree.

3. Helen's got it figured out.
We really need to start being an opposition party instead of a collection of non-Repugs. Unfortunately, almost all politicians, both Repugs and Dems, get their money from the same corporate cesspool. Kinda makes it likely that the corporate interests are the ones that get priority, if you know what I mean.

4. Democrats have plenty of courage
It's those weaklings in Congress who so lack it, along with most of the leadership. They're so busy hoping none of Dean's passion rubs off on them they don't stand for anything besides a rubber stamp.

6. Helen is spot on about Hillary
being oh so busy pandering to the right (flag burning amendment? this is what keeps her awake at night?). I've never much admired Hillary for that reason.
