The letter by Thomas Riedel (Dec. 24) titled "Wiretapping facts" is full of non-facts, otherwise known as lies. Presidents Carter and Clinton never authorized warrantless wiretaps on American citizens, as Bush has done. The wiretapping was not known by all the appropriate members of Congress; and of the ones who knew, they were prohibited by law from discussing it.
Bush was required by law to go to the secret court set up by FISA to obtain a warrant - within 72 hours - for a wiretap, and he refused to. He broke the law, plain and simple.
I am ashamed of some of my fellow Americans' eagerness to allow absolutely no judicial oversight of law enforcement activities. They are arguing against the Fourth Amendment and the checks and balances set up in the Constitution. Is it irrational fear that drives this, or is it more calculated?
Please turn off the Faux Newz and the right-wing radio and come back to reality. Our country needs informed patriotism, not blind faith in bad policy.
Two quotes to think about:
"Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither" - Ben Franklin;
"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself" - FDR.
Indeed.
