In response to your Jan. 4 editorial, "Butt out, Mr. D'Amato,"
there are lots of good reasons to oppose Bill Weld as the Republican nominee for governor of New York.Recently, Weld served as the CEO of Decker College, a for-profit technical college based in Kentucky. The college is under federal investigation and has been banned from receiving any additional federal student loan money. In short, low-income students were ripped off and the whole process is under investigation -- as it should be.
Sadly,
Weld's annual salary was set at $700,000, and yet he claimed to know nothing about the improper activities at the school he was in charge of. How can the chief executive of a college under investigation, a governor who literally walked away from his job, be running for the governor's mansion in Albany?
Weld got bored with being governor of Massachusetts and quit before his term was over. He turned his back on the people and walked away. Who says he won't get bored in New York and quit again?
...snip...
At a time when our Republican Party faces widespread criticism for ethical lapses, now is not the time to put forward a candidate who is under investigation.(signed)

I admit, it's the height of irony to have Al serving as the spokesman for ethics, but I'll take the help where I can get it.
