Christian Coalition Urges the U.S. House to Pass Congressman Bartlett's 'Holly's Law' (Taking Abortion Pill, RU486 off the Market)

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Christian Coalition of America commends Congressman Roscoe Bartlett, (R-MD), for reintroducing his "Holly's Law" legislation, H.R. 1079 (with 78 cosponsors) during the 109th Congress. And Senator Jim DeMint, (R-SC), is also to be commended for authoring the Senate version, S. 511, (with 12 cosponsors) of Congressman Bartlett's legislation. Congressman Bartlett has discovered new evidence in FDA documents, which show an unacceptably high incidence of deaths and terrible injuries to women who take the RU486 abortion pill.

The Bartlett/DeMint legislation will withdraw the approved application under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for the drug commonly known as RU-486 and provides for a review by the Comptroller General of the United States of the process by which the Food and Drug Administration approved such a drug.

The President of the Christian Coalition of America, Roberta Combs said, "Christian Coalition of America wholeheartedly supports "Holly's Law." It is almost criminal that the federal government has refused to remove this deadly abortion pill from the market when young girls' lives have been destroyed after taking RU486. If Members of Congress really care about the lives and health of women in this country, it is long past time for the United States Congress to pass "Holly's Law."

Background: Holly Marie Stavola, 5 years old, died on February 4, 2000 of encephalopathy, encephalitis with resultant residual central nervous system impairment, which she developed following her second dose of MMR vaccine.

Summary: The law states that prior to administering a second dose of MMR, a physician
may give the child's parent or guardian the option of consenting to an antibody titer to determine the child's immunity to MMR (see section 2a below). If a child has documented lab evidence of immunity to MMR, the child is exempt from further vaccination for MMR (see section 2b). However, DHHS must prepare a brochure explaining the nature and purpose of the MMR vaccine and the antibody titer used to determine immunity and must make this brochure available to all licensed physicians in the State.

An Open Letter From the Parents of Holly Patterson - Death by RU-486

November 6, 2003

Dear Sir or Madam:

The Alameda County Coroner's report has validated what we already believed to be true. Holly has died from an RU-486 chemical induced abortion. There are no quick fixes for a pregnancy or magical pills that will make it go away. Our family, friends and community are all deeply saddened and forever marred by Holly's tragic and preventable death.

Holly lived as an adult by law for only 19 days, yet she became pregnant when she was just 17 years old. We now know that she learned about her pregnancy in the second week of August and was so distraught over her unplanned pregnancy that she sought help for depression from her family doctor on September 10, 2003 - the very day that she began the drug induced abortion process.

Holly was a strong, healthy, intelligent and ambitious teenager who fell victim of a process that wholly failed her, beginning with the 24-year-old man who had unprotected sex with her, impregnated her, and then proceeded to facilitate the secrecy that surrounded her pregnancy and abortion. Under this conspiracy of silence, Holly suffered and depended on the safety of the FDA approved pill administered by Planned Parenthood and emergency room treatment by Valley Care Medical Center where she received pain killers for severe cramping and was sent home. On Saturday and Sunday, Holly cried and complained of severe cramping and constipation, and even allowed us to comfort her but could not tell us what she was really going through. On September 17, 2003, she succumbed to septic shock and died while many members of our family waited anxiously, yet expectantly in the Critical Care Unit for her to recover until we were forced behind the curtain when it was clear that she was dying.

Then if some unfortunate patient dies or is injured from the prescribed RU-486, then let her or her estate SUE THE HELL OUT OF THE PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY THAT MANUFACTURED IT!

Before that suit goes forward it might be a good idea to lay the blame where it actually belongs.

Mifoprostol with a prostaglandin (the RU-486 regimen), induces a miscarriage. From a medical perspective it really makes no difference whether the miscarriage is spontaneous or induced - the outcome and the health contraindications are exactly the same.

If a patient presents at an emergency room and indicates that she has had a miscarriage - either spontaneous or induced - there is a pretty standard treatment and this very often involves a D&C as a precautionary measure in order to remove any possibly retained gestational material which may lead to sepsis and worse. At the very least there should be an ultrasound performed to properly diagnose whether that D&C is necessary. While the tissue often is absorbed or passed without incident the fact the patient arrived at the ER in pain should have been sufficient indication that the treatment could not be simply passive i.e. send her back home to "wait and see".

Holly Patterson was sent home. To date NOBODY on the antichoice side has been screaming about the incompetence displayed at a hospital that treated an emergency patient in that way. Whether the physician was morally opposed to abortion or not there was still a duty to treat this young woman and physicians do include D&C as a part of their training in their OBS rotation (although the talibornagain would even prevent this minimal training if they could).

Holly was not killed by RU-486 but her death was caused bu the incompetence of a hospital and physician that failed to properly treat a miscarriage in the manner appropriate for an accredited hospital emergency department.
