Bush visit stirs unrest
A tense nation increases security as he arrives to seek more support for war on terror

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN - When President Bush arrived in Pakistan on Friday night, he was greeted by a giant poster proclaiming him "a friend." But anti-American protests across the country sent a different message to the president, who was determined to gain increased support against terrorism from the Islamic nation.

Bush landed at an air base near Islamabad in Air Force One with window shades drawn and running lights turned off. His motorcade headed into a capital that had the appearance of a city under lockdown by the military.

Extra-tight security measures were deemed necessary for Bush's one-day visit after a U.S. diplomat and three others were killed Wednesday in a suicide bombing in Karachi, a center of Islamic militancy.

On Friday, police used tear gas to stop a crowd of about 1,000 stone-throwing demonstrators from marching on the U.S. Consulate in Karachi. In other cities and towns across the country, protesters burned U.S. flags and chanted, "Death to Bush." More demonstrations were planned for today.

I'm absolutely serious here - why would they send Bush into places where he stirs up violence, huge demonstrations, people getting killed. And these demonstrations are getting worse.

There is a pattern here. Wherever Bush goes, there is trouble. And Bush has traveled quite a bit in these past 5 years. It's a fact: he needs a small army with him to protect him. Last year, Laura Bush made a trip to Palestine for some reason. The photos showed her in a black veil. She was cowering down, obviously afraid. She was surrounded by security people. I thought to myself, why on earth is she doing this? Nobody wants her there.

Why are they doing this? Is this a show of power? That Bush can be triumphant on earth, no matter how pissed the entire world's population is?

Are they stupid? I don't think they are. But surely this can't be a good thing. Can it?
