Editorial: Sensenbrenner's crude language

A Cap Times editorial
March 24, 2006

We did not expect U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner to change his anti-immigrant position simply because tens of thousands of Wisconsinites rallied in Milwaukee this week to call for humane and responsible reforms to current immigration policies. But the Menomonee Falls Republican's cavalier dismissal of the massive demonstration as an "illegal alien rally" was as irresponsible as it was inaccurate.

While the crowd in Milwaukee was predominantly Latino, the best bet is that most of those present were citizens and legal residents of the United States. Even Sensenbrenner who is emerging as the House's leading immigrant basher ought to be smart enough to figure out that foreign citizens who do not want to reveal the fact that they are in the United States illegally do not show up in big numbers at public events organized to draw attention to immigration matters. Yet he dismissed the rally as a gathering of lawbreakers.

The congressman should be ashamed of himself.

4. Sensenbrenner es un pinche pendejo cabrón ......
I would imagine if all the immigrant workers staged a nationwide work stoppage, the effects would be keenly felt by people like non-Sensenbrenner and his supporters.

Think of all the restaurant and hotel service workers, the agricultural workers, domestics, all the "invisible" people that keep this country and economy running.

Hell, think of all the major league baseball games that would have to be canceled!

8. We'd feel it, all right

Yeah, maybe we'd be able to get some jobs, after our original jobs were outsourced to India.

The myth is no longer true, about Mexicans doing jobs that Americans wouldn't want to do. That insults hard-working Americans (remember the "working poor" John Edwards refers to?) who want those jobs. Mexicans are also getting jobs in offices, doing low-level data entry work, after being trained while they're on welfare.

I wholeheartedly welcome LEGAL immigrants from Mexico, so no, I'm not racist. I simply ask Mexicans to do what people from other countries do: Come here legally, learn our language, and respect our culture instead of trying to force your language upon us.

It can't be that hard to do, given that millions of immigrants from Europe, Asia, and every other continent do it every single day.

Have you ever tried getting welfare and professional training without having a valid social security number a legal ID? Where exactly is that happening? Would you consider that a good career path for yourself?

It would seem to me that you, being fluent in English, would be a preferred hire. Was this job taken away from you? Are you saying you cannot get that low-level data entry job because the companies you refer to are only hiring illegal aliens? How do they handle the federal and state tax issues? I find your premises hard to believe.

Finally, no one is forcing anything upon you, so please don't play victim. It makes no difference to me if you're never forced to learn another language.
