Wrong way to treat our troops, veterans

While attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq have escalated from snipers to convoy explosions to missile-downed helicopters, there are also troubling concerns about how this country treats its soldiers.

It goes far beyond the long-term concerns about health care and overall respect for veterans. Consider some recent news reports:

• The Bush administration is seeking to stop 17 American POWs tortured during the Gulf War from collecting nearly $1 billion from frozen Iraqi assets. Although the POWs won the judgment, the Bush administration says the assets now belong to the United States and are needed in Iraqi rebuilding efforts.
