Ohio losing faith with President (BBC)
By Justin Webb
BBC News, Washington

President George W Bush's reshuffling of his White House team is part of an attempt to salvage a reputation which seems to be sinking fast. But Justin Webb in Washington says it is too late to be tinkering with the staff: most Americans have already consigned President Bush to history.

I am here to report two conversations with two very different Americans on the subject of President Bush.

The first was with a woman who described herself to me as one of the biggest fundraisers for the president in the entire state of Ohio.

The second was with an illegal immigrant from Venezuela.

Guess who thought that Mr Bush could bounce back from his present difficulties? That's right, the illegal immigrant.

5. One small observation I have
The article talks about the illegal immigrant from Venezuela, who thinks that Bush will bounce back because of his conservative views on things like abortion, and gay marriage. In my experience, 2nd generation Latinos lose some of their conservative viewpoints as they are immersed in American culture.

I've know some families where the children can have 8 siblings, but who limit their own family size to 3, or sometimes 4. In addition, there is a certain amount of resistance to wives working outside of the home. The men tend to become self-employed, forming companies which set tile, own lawn services, or small family owned Mexican restaurants. The first and sometimes 2nd generation Latinos do not approve of their wives or daughters working, unless they work for family owned businesses.

This is not scientific, or anything official. These are only my own personal observations, going back over 50 years. I am a native Texan, so the families I cite are all people I have known.Yes, they are very deeply conservative when they first come here, but the children and grandchildren become immersed in American culture, and marry gringos, so there are a lot of different viewpoints which come into play then.

I am also not able to comment from my own experience in the Latinos who work for large companies. I am only familiar with those who start small, with lawn services, bakeries, restaurants, or in fields of construction. I can safely say, though judging by the people I've known, that each successive generation is more liberal than the previous.

7. I saw what you describe quite often when I lived in Miami
with that city being predominantly Cuban, you get a interesting look inside latin culture. And you're right...the offspring of the baby-boomer generation of Cubans tend to be more liberal than their parent, if only to rebel and mark out their individuality.

That said, there are plenty who are socially conservative.
