Ken Lay "Shocked" at conviction

Enron Founder Lay 'Shocked' at Conviction
May 26 10:31 AM US/Eastern

By MICHAEL GRACZYK
Associated Press Writer

HOUSTON

Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling were known as visionaries, hands-on executives, corporate titans directing the high-flying ship at Wall Street darling Enron Corp. Add another title: convicted felons.

"Certainly we're surprised," a shaken Lay said Thursday after a jury capped a four-month-long fraud and conspiracy trial and in its sixth day of deliberations returned guilty verdicts against him and Skilling. "I think it's more appropriate to say we're shocked. This is not the outcome we expected."

Besides all six counts in the main trial, Lay, Enron's founder, also was convicted of four charges of bank fraud and making false statements to banks in a separate non-jury trial before U.S. District Judge Sim Lake related to his personal finances.

2. I have no doubt he is shocked ....
I believe the conventional wisdom has been that rich white men (can afford the very best of the best r/t legal representation)"always" avoid prison. I have no doubt that his hubris played a role in his shock , as well

I am heartened that the conventional wisdom did not hold true.

3. And Lay played the God card
With a straight face, he said, "I firmly believe I'm innocent of the charges against me. We believe that God in fact is in control and indeed he does work all things for good for those who love the Lord."

But he still stole all the money, whined when the court wanted to limit his monthly spending to some ridiculous figure that many Americans survive a year or two on, and hasn't given any major portion of his "remaining" worldly possessions to the poor or infirm, the last of which I do firmly believe Jesus would have him do as a good Christian.

4. Of course he is shocked.
Wealthy white men like himself who get even wealthier by stealing, are not supposed to go to jail.

Shit seems to be biting them all in the ass these days.

Gotta love it!

 ass-hat

It is to bad that you did not get convicted of manslaughter because of the deaths when YOU turned-off the electricity in California. Remember that place that was going down with the lights off, unlike the Titanic!

Well California is still here and you are going down:thumbsdown:!

8. you don't encourage employees to buy more stock when you know
the reported earnings are fraudulent; and then you don't allow the employees 401k plans that hold all the enron stock to become locked when the fraudulent accounting is discovered and the stock goes into free fall; and finally you don't sell your personal enron stock while all this is going on. If this guy does not think what he was doing was wrong then he really does need prison to screw his head back on straight.

15. They had teams of yes-man corporate lawyers telling them
that all the stuff they were doing was just a whisker on the side of legality. No wonder they were surprised to find out that hiding losses in dummy corporations and lying to stockholders while setting up millions of old folks for the devastation of the loss of their retirements was ILLEGAL.

I mean, how DARE we find them criminals? They paid for the best lawyers in the world to tell them they were not.

Can somebody please send Jesus down with a baseball bat to smite Ken Lay? He needs a good smack!
And I heard him take the Lord's name in vain!
