Dean supporters: Opposition to war earns the name "Coward" Dean
Edited on Sun Nov-16-03 02:30 PM by MindPilot
This cartoon appeared in today's (San Diego, CA) North County Times.

opinion@nctimes.com is the editor's email addy. (sorry but I can't seem to make this display right)

Apparently this cartoonist thinks he's being creative, but the “cartoon” doesn’t even rise to the level of commentary; it is simply stupid. All the reasoned argument in the world has no effect on Republicans because they have no facts on which to base their assertions, so they do nothing more than project their own failings. Now an intelligent person unfamiliar with Thornhill’s (ahem) “work” might interpret this piece to be pointing out that very fact. However, it doesn’t take but a few Google minutes to discover Thornhill is just another mindless media mouthpiece shilling for the right.

1. Look closer. The cartoon isn't implying Dean is a coward.

ON EDIT: That's what I thought at first, but note how Thornhill drew a Republican Elephant modifying the billboard.

Since conservatives know that Dean is a man of integrity & honor, unlike the current AWOL man-child who is the Commander In Chief, their only option is to accuse him of cowardice.

So I guess the message of this cartoon is right-on.

2. It takes a HUGE set of balls
to take on the corporate nationalists. I think the cartoonist was poking fun of the Republican false patriotism with the Elephant.

5. No that's not the case
As I mentioned in my message, someone unfamilar with this cartoonist might see it that way, but no. This is a typical right wing ad homninem attack which will be defended with accusations of name-calling and slander.

10. Not unusual for San Diego county...never heard of the cartoonist
but I don't read that paper either.

I'd say that those of us who were against the
invasion were actually the true patriots and far-sighted
heroes.

11. Bush/Cheney certainly won't bring this up......and I think Republicans
will be mighty foolish to give Dean the opening to lay out the collective bravery of the Chickenhawks in charge.

13. It seems simple-minded to me
Will there be readers who actually find this clever? Looks like they are scraping the bottom of the barrel both for humor and for criticism of Dean.

14. I think the point of the cartoon
is that Dean will be easy to beat because the Repigs will call him a coward for opposing the war. They will be smearing him like crazy.

16. My guess is that by election time 20004 even Bush will say he's
opposed to war in Iraq...his admin is now putting out the message of troop withdrawals by June 2004.
