Shift focus to biofuels beyond corn ethanol
Iowa dreaming...

http://desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060612/OPINION03/606120308/1035/archive

Candidates for governor Jim Nussle and Chet Culver both emphasize Iowa's potential to become a major energy-producing state. Nussle even includes the notion in his campaign slogan, saying he wants to "energize" Iowa.

The candidates are seizing an issue whose time has come.

If the nation shifts from fossil fuels (the residue of long-ago plant materials) to fuels derived from present-day plant materials, such as corn, soybeans and switchgrass, the entire economy could be transformed.

What oil did for Texas, biofuels could do for the Midwest, with Iowa at its heart.

1. Lordy. If it wasn't such a sad statement it'd be funny.
I don't want to see ANY state get from biofeuls the various messes...political and environmental...that oil gave Texas.

Iowa obviously has great potential for ag production and a role in biofuels is obviously in their future.

I hope the manage the politics, money, and environment better than Texas. It'd be a shame to see versions of Beaumont, Tx come to be sitting on the Mississippi and the Missouri.

Somehow "Distilleries of Madison County" just doesn't have much appeal.
